Google Docs vs. Google Drive
-
The support page on Google Docs is here:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/google-docs/
It clearly shows how to use the menus in Google Docs to generate HTML which one then copies and pastes to one’s WordPress blog. But as I understand it, Google Docs has now been merged with Google Drive, and looks quite different. There is no File menu with a Publish to Web item, in either Google Docs or Google Drive. The mechanisms described in the support page are not available.
I can put a link to a Google Drive document on a page. The user who clicks on it goes to Google Drive to view the document. But that is not what the old embed of a Google Docs document used to do; it showed the document as part of the blog page itself. (That’s why they were called “embed codes.”)
Is the old functionality no longer available, or am I missing something? Thanks.
(I searched the forums and several recent questions about Google Drive have been closed with no reply. I hope that doesn’t happen to this one.)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there! The File menu does still exist if you open a specific document. Can you make sure that you have a specific document open from your drive in the Google Docs web app?
I do see that the step about clicking “Start Publishing” is slightly different now. You’ll need to open the drop down for “Published content & settings”. Then you’ll want to grab the “Embed” code, not the link.
Let me know if you’re still having trouble!

Hey Shawna J,
Thanks for the prompt and accurate reply. Sorry if I sounded like a grumpy old man.
I can share the document without opening it. But I have to open it for editing (not just view it) in order to get “Publish to web.” (grump: Poor design on Google’s part. /grump)
Love that Irish hair. Thanks again!

Glad I could help! I agree, I’m not sure why Google has that ‘publish to web’ section separate from the sharing options.
Let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you. :)
