Google Drive direct link images not loading
-
Hi everyone,
I have a number of images on my site that are hosted in a publicly shared Google Drive and displayed on the blog via Image > Insert from URL and then pasting in the direct link to the image file on Google Drive.
These were working fine until yesterday when every single Google Drive image has stopped displaying on the site, no idea why – any ideas? I don’t have any plugins that might be conflicting/need to be reset.
Am aware the public share Google Drive URL for an image doesn’t work in the Insert from URL field (e.g. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PESnheJEoLNvDE3xgs4qMKv7r1ndQ8vO/view?usp=drive_link) but if the URL is modified into direct access version (e.g. https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1PESnheJEoLNvDE3xgs4qMKv7r1ndQ8vO) it does or at least did.
If I paste either of the above URLs into browser the image loads correctly, folder is set up correctly in Google Drive for sharing. It just seems that WordPress is currently refusing/unable to display the image from the URL provided.
Cheers,

You can’t insert Google Drive images into a Carrousel. Those images must be located in your Media.

I’m looking at this post https://beentheredronedthat.wordpress.com/2023/12/28/raf-upper-heyford-1-of-2/ and see quite a few image captions but no images.
A direct link to any image you want to display via “Insert from URL” has to end in JPG, PNG, or GIF for it to show using the Image block. In the case of Google Drive, use an embed or custom HTML block. More on this here https://wordpress.com/support/google-docs/#google-drive I haven’t tested this to confirm it works as expected.
But, why it worked previously and why it doesn’t now, I don’t have an answer
And as @staartmees mentioned any image you want to display in a Gallery/Carousel must be uploaded to your WordPress.com website

It is an update from google. Please report the issue here.

@harsith534 this problem cannot be fixed by wordpress as it is caused by a (mis)configuration on google drive’s side. It seems google isn’t in a hurry to solve this problem.

Same problem is afflicting web-forums too. I use direct-link URL to embed lots of images I share across multiple forums. So much easier than upload them to ever single post. Was working great for +10yrs. Now 10,000+ posts I’ve made have no images…. Definitely Google Drive issue with cross-domain linking since it works perfectly when pasting into address-bar of any browser. Hopefully they get this straightened out soon.

Im facing the same issue. Last week wordpress updated some of the plugins, i that might be the reason but i guess i was wrong. There is some issue at google drive end.
