Google fonts and GDPR again

  • Unknown's avatar

Is that after reloading the page? Shouldn’t it at least show the fonts loaded from wp.com?

When I first open Dev Tools I see the same empty columns. After reloading the page, however, it shows me a row of fonts that were loaded from wp.com and fonts.gstatic.com.

We’ll need to reach out to the development team about your site in particular. Since it is the weekend, we likely won’t have anything to report until Monday.

    We’ll be back in touch.

Can you please be so kind and point to four or five themes that are usable for blogs with several sites and DON’T load google fonts? They can not be filtered out on the chosing table for themes.

We have heavy justive issues occurring in Germany and Austria due to this inconvenience and I have spent already several hours on that. I tried a big part of the list and it turned out useless, only single sites and such things.

The best thing would be a simple swith for all of us: load google fonts ON or OFF and that’s it. To get that via plugins we shall pay 25 $ per month. So, alternatively I can only shut off my whole blog.

I am sure most other users feel the same.

    Thank you!

  • Hi there,

We’re currently talking with the devs internally. We’ll definitely keep you updated once we hear back from them.

Our organization (in Austria) recently got a letter from a lawyer requesting the payment of a compensation for transferring data to the US due to Google Fonts. So this is really an issue in Europe and should be proactively addressed and communicated by wordpress.com.

I’ll try to switch the theme but would really appreciate if you’d provide a version of Alves, with locally stored GF!!!

For me, it is also a problem. I use the theme ‘toujour’ which uses Google Fonts. I tried to find an alternative theme with locally stored fonts and the same structure as ‘toujour’ but wasn’t successful. I think wordpress.com has to provide new versions of the affected themes or a plugin for free. And please, as soon as possible it is urgent in Austria and Germany…Thank you!

  • Hi @pittalexandra, we’ll share that feedback, though if there’s any urgency you’ll probably want to just go with a theme that’s close to what you want.

The site (template) editor would allow you to set up something similar, so I’d recommend watching this if you haven’t already:

    https://wordpress.com/support/full-site-editing/

  • @setsailat1, for Alves, just go ahead and choose whichever theme you like best in the list we sent earlier. Focus on your font preferences, since layout and colors are changeable.

When you switch to the new theme, opt to preserve your home page content. Then you can make whatever other minor edits are needed.

Because GDPR is so far reaching, will WordPress.com be changing its other themes to load Google Fonts locally as well? Thanks in advance.

    @staff-doublebassd:

Is there any news yet from your development team? My site has been set to private for three weeks already and I would love to set it back to public soon.

    Thank you!

  • Hi there,

We just reached out to the team in charge of looking into this and we’ll post here once we hear back from them.

Appreciate your patience in this matter.

Hello, I found out, that it is impossible to add a cookie banner to those themes, with lokally saved fonts. Sites build with WordPress.com use cookies for the statistic, and this cannot be deactivated. This is really amazing, there is no way to build a website with the premium plan (and lower), which is conform with the law in the EU! And all what we hear is please wait…..maybe we will look into this…..

  • Hello again!

We really do appreciate your patience while we look into this.

I found out, that it is impossible to add a cookie banner to those themes, with lokally saved fonts. Sites build with WordPress.com use cookies for the statistic, and this cannot be deactivated.

What are your findings thus far?

    Many thanks in advance.

Free Public sites using FSE display the Cookies & Consent banner by default, but since FSE themes do not have a widget area, there’s no ability to add it to sites on the Personal and Premium plans or edit it on free sites.

Here’s what it says on the Cookies & Consent Banner support doc https://wordpress.com/support/widgets/cookie-widget/

Themes that support the Site Editor do not use widgets, so you won’t see Appearance → Widgets in your dashboard. Instead, you can search for a Cookies & Consents Banner plugin.

A real Catch 22 for anyone not on a Business plan.

Justjennifer is right. But there exist also themes with widget area, but without widget for a banner!!! Some of these themes have fonts called ‘system font’, I think this could be a solution to avoid google fonts loading from the server. But there is no possibility to add a banner. So with the premium plan there is really no chance to get the website conform with the laws…

  • Unknown's avatar

Themes with Global Styles have the option to use “System Fonts”. (As do FSE themes.) https://wordpress.com/support/custom-fonts/#change-fonts-with-global-styles but I have not tested all of them. :)

But there exist also themes with widget area, but without widget for a banner!

@pittalexandra Is there a particular theme where you don’t see the Cookies widget available in the Widget section of the Customizer? AFAIK if there is a widget area, then it’s possible to add and edit the Cookies & Consent banner on sites with the Personal or Premium plan. https://wordpress.com/support/widgets/cookie-widget/#add-the-cookies-amp-consents-banner

Since this issue of the Cookies banner widget isn’t directly connected to the topic of this thread, which is Google Fonts, if you still need help with widgets, you’ll want to open a separate forum thread and let us know your WordPress.com site’s address. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

@justjennifer you are right, with the premium plan, a widget for an editable cookie banner is available for these themes with global styles.

    @justjennifer
I don’t need an additional thread ;), I wish to use my website as it is, but with locally stored google fonts ;)

@staff The themes of Anders Norén (for example Lovecraft, Hemingway) should be according to his website updated in june 2022 and should now contain locally hosted fonts. I tried some of these themes, but they still use google fonts on the server. Is it possible to get an updated version on wordpress.com?

  • Hi @pittalexandra, we have versions of those themes that were modified for our services, so they wouldn’t be following the same update schedule.

I can let the theme team know. Just note they’re not likely to make big changes to themes we no longer offer here, and may encourage you to switch instead.

(edited: I left out the word not & that makes a big difference!)

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi @supernovia, thanks for your answer. You speak in riddles ;). Which themes do wordpress no longer offer and not likely update with lokal bundled fonts? All, without theses FSE themes??? With the FSE themes there is no possibility to add a cookie banner with the premium plan (no widget area!). So, there is no opportunity for me to get the website conform with the GDPR. It would be very nice, if wordpress.com could clear that up and communicate this to all users in Germany and Austria (and the EU)! The only solution I see at this time, is not to use wordpress.com.
