Google fonts and GDPR again
-
Hey there, sorry for being unclear.
The WordPress.com version of Lovecraft was basically split off and modified from the original version several years ago; same for several other themes here, some of which are “retired” (basically only available on sites that already use them.) And after several years of changes, they’re really just quite different now. Updates to the original Lovecraft don’t necessarily wind up here, for example.
We’re currently encouraging folks to choose from the list of FSE themes we shared earlier in the thread. I’ll share your point about the need for a GDPR block for FSE themes, too. Thanks for that.

Hi there, my name is Sonja and I have the same problem with the reloading Google Fonts from another server. In order to be able to install plugins, which I thought would take care of this problem, I made the upgrade from Premium to Business, which now costs 25 €/month instead of 9 €/month.
First I installed the plugin OMGF by Daan, but since this plugin did not work on my website/theme “Profile” I installed another plugin called Local Google Fonts by EverPress. This one was recommended by WordPress to me while chatting with the team of WordPress.
But unfortunately both plugins are not working on my website/my theme “Profile”. By chatting again with WordPress, I was told, to get directly in contact with EverPress and Daan, since WordPress did not create these plugins and so they are not familiar with it.
And while getting directly in contact with Daan (OMGF) and EverPress (Local Google Fonts) I learned that the Google Fonts on my site are loaded by WebFont Loader. Daan (OMGF) told me that the plugin OMGFPro would take care of this problem, which is great, but this plugin would cost something, too.
So, I also have the question. Isn’t it possible for WordPress tho create and offer only themes which already handle this problem?
I also saw the list of themes which should actually handle this problem, but read in this forum that these themes do not work either solving the GF-problem. So at the moment I do not know what to do.
Any suggestions?
Would be great if you could help me out, since I feel a little bit lost at the moment.Greetings from Germany!

Hi, @sonjafasel, it is really frustrating with the google fonts problem. WordPress.com is not willing to help. I tried these block themes with bundled fonts from the list, but it is very difficult and time-consuming to adapt my website. The only solution I see at this point is to move the website to another provider.

Hi @pittalexandra :-) Thank you so much for your reply and the infos you are sharing! Yes, it really is frustating. At the moment I am still wondering, what I can do, what will be the best for me and my website etc.
I was so happy, that I was able to create a website with WordPress, since I am a total beginner in creating a website and it was quite easy to do this with WordPress until this problem with the Google Fonts came up… sigh.
Yes, you are right! Changing the provider would be another way to deal with the problem – the situation. But at the moment I am still hoping, that WordPress will come up with a solution real soon! And which is for free for all the users of WordPress!

Hi @sonjafasel, I spend a lot of time to find a solution for the GDPR problems. From my point of view wordpress.com has to offer a solution, but not from their point of view ;-). My experiences so far: now it is possible to search for themes with local bundled fonts (themes, filter, functions, in german: gebündelte Schriften). A cookie banner is now available, I guess. But these few themes (block themes) have a completely different structure (and all look the same), it is a lot of work to adapt a classic constructed website like mine it is and some features are missing (for example a sidebar). I hope this experience will help you. Best wishes from Austria :-)

To complete, what I found out: not all FSE and new themes have bundled fonts (I don’t know why)! Choosing ‘system font’, doesn’t solve the problem.

Hi @pittalexandra :-) Thank you soo, soo much for your messages! Oh, I see! May I ask which theme has and also works with the bundled fonts? :-) Would be great to know! :-) Thank you so much and greetings back from Germany to Austria!

Hi @sonjafasel, I think only these themes you found with searching for ‘feature:bundled-fonts’ or in german ‘gebündelte Schriften’ works, but I cheeked not all of the themes ;-)
-
Hi @pittalexandra :-) Oh, I see!! So I will have a look at this! Thank you so much again!! :-)

Hi @pittalexandra!! I am so happy!! I just found a solution to the GF-Problem!! In another forum I read, that it may work when you reset your fonts to the fonts your theme usually / actually uses – and this reset works on my website!! Sometimes it can be so easy! lol
You can reset your fonts when you go to design/anpassen/schriften – and then you go to the fonts and click on the cross (rechts oben neben der ausgewählten Schrift). The original fonts will appear then.
I hope this works for your website as well! :-)
Happy Greetings to you!! -
P. S. But I do not know if it works this way because I also installed the two plugins OMFG and Local Google Fonts or if it will also work without these plugins.

Hi @sonjafasel, congratulations :-) :-) :-)
I read this post also, but it didn’t work with my theme :-(
Can you share, which theme you use? Maybe I will switch to that ;-) -
Hi @pittalexandra :) Thank you soo much!! Oh no, that is too bad! :(
Sure, I use the theme called “Profile” by Organic Themes. But I was told by WordPress that this theme is no longer available… :( But maybe you can find it nevertheless? I’ll keep my fingers crossed!! -

Hi all, to share my experiences: From the support I get the information, that they will solve the problem for all themes maybe in the future. At this time only the themes found with ‘bundled fonts’ in German ‘gebündelte Schriften’ store the fonts locally. But attention for these themes there is no cookie banner available for the personal and premium plan. WordPress recommended to allow advertising and a not edible cookie banner will be activated automatically. With the theme ‘Independent publisher 2’ you can use system fonts (choose ‘standard fonts’) and the problem with google fonts is solved and you will have a cookie banner :-). Good luck!

Hi @pittalexandra :) Thank you so, so much for sharing these precious informations!!! Greetings from Germany! :-)

@staff-heroponriki @supernova I’ve changed my design to one of the above mentioned and the google font checker still complains. Is there something to configure to not use google fonts with one of those designs?
-
I was finally able to solve the issue by clearing all cookies from my website’s cache. There were some very old, unused cookies that caused the problem. If you can’t access the cache yourself maybe support can help with that.
Good luck!
