Google indexing of old wordpress.com blog

    Hi all,

I searched the forums for this with no luck. I’ve moved my blog to wordpress.org permanently, I’m done with importing all my blog entries and comments. I’m wondering if I should delete my wordpress.com blog, or should I just keep it on private? I want Google to start gathering results from wordpress.org site instead of the old .com site. Will Google continue to index my old wordpress.com site if I’m no longer updating it and it’s on private?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

If its in private the robots.txt will be set to do not index.

You could keep it public…and just set it for search engines not to index.

Or delete it, but its permanent.

I’d suggest making it private :)

Thanks for the advice. Dreamsburned, how would I set it for search engines not to index?

I would change the visibility to private and export the contents of my wordpress.org install out and then into the wordpress.com blog periodically so I have a back-up blog. In fact that’s what I’m doing already. Here’s the link you will need (choose option 2) http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

If you’re still hosting your images on WP.com, setting it to private will backfire on you, because those images will not be visible anymore and POOF, all the images on your new blog will vanish. Make sure you imported the images as well as the post HTML.

You can change it to non-indexible under Settings->Privacy.

Sounds like keeping it private is the best option for me. I’ve already exported my whole blog to my new site and yesterday I set the old wordpress.com blog to private, all images on my new blog seem to be working fine. Timethief, good idea about keeping a backup blog, that sounds like the way to go. Thanks for the help!
