google lists blog, not blog posts

  • Unknown's avatar

i’m flabbergasted. my blog continues to be in google’s page no 1 for different relevant search terms. however, literally so. my BLOG appears, not the url of my blog POST!

i know there are already threads on this, but somehow i couldn’t find them. :(

i have a silly idea on how to remedy this. will pinging my blog post url at pingoat help, instead of pinging the blog url?

if anyone has a better solution, please help! plenty of good karma awaits you!! :D

  • Unknown's avatar

would you care to provide the particular search terms examples?

  • Unknown's avatar

    oops, sorry, i should have thought of that :( {blushing}

    example search terms
    -myfreecopyright
    -polls for wordpress

these are just off the top my head. i have some more, but i have to check my search terms in my blog stats and be back in a while! :D

-how to protect a rss feed

    -multiple social bookmark submissions
this is a little different. it’s in google’s page no 2 and it lists my blog’s category, like:
    http://shongjog.wordpress.com/category/social-bookmarking/
the only reason i can think of is this, i have several posts on social bookmarking. and instead of linking to other sb posts as related posts, i linked them to my blog’s category “social bookmarking”.

i used to have more search terms, but those particular ones are absent from the blog stats for the timebeing.
i hope the four examples will suffice. :D

eek! you posted while i was typing my response.
ok, i will go check the url and see what i feel!

gosh, THAAAAAAANKS for your quick responses!! :D

  • Unknown's avatar

    hey! :D

    what a pleasant surprise!

but um, i have mixed feelings. i mean, is this what it’s supposed to be with anyone’s blog? like, blog appears in mainsearch, but post is bound to appear in “i’m feeling lucky”? do searchers use it as much as the search button?
just wondering how commonsensical it is for the majority of googlers out there!

is there anything i can do on my accord to make my blog POSTS appear for “search”, as well as, “i’m feeling lucky”? i just want to make it more convenient for googlers (like me) who prefer the search button! :D

oopsie! i was a bit mislead on polls for wordpress.com for:

my blog results visibly show the blog url (the first two results), but the third result – which is timethief’s old blog – shows the blog post url visibly. in the end it doesn’t matter, but i was just wondering what i did wrong.

i am lucky though that the first result leads to the post, although the second result leads to the blog! why these differences?

ye, thanks for that. but there’s no way i can instruct searchers to do that, now, can i? :D

and a lot of people are used to using the google search box that comes in ff, opera, flock etc. so i’d say search is still a priority for most, as spposed to that lucky thingie! or else, that “i’m feeling lucky” would have been included in browser search boxes, no? :D

i thought of the same problem while creating my blog.. if Google finds two pages with same content, it randomly chooses one .. giving priority to ones which are deeper in directory. So I decided not to put category widget but it will make difficult users to browse my site.
So I came up with an Idea to use text widget instead of category widget and put links to categories with nofollow tag in them .
    Yet to implement

    hello nishugoyal,
    thanks foe dropping by!

will not having the category widget help? i mean, do you categorise all your posts as uncategorised? or something equally vague? that could help.

cos, if you do use categories, but not the widget, it will still get enlisted in google, won’t it? cos it will appear in the wp.com global tags page!

the text widget thing seems interesting. could you please let us know of the outcome?
    let’s keep our fingers crossed!

An “I’m Feeling Lucky” search means your post hit it #1 on on goog’s SERP, and that’s all about it.

your search results visibly show the post URL (the first result) as “I’d expect”, the full URL of your post is rather long that’s why it shortened.

everything is all right with it. not an issue at all. really.

ok, thanks for the bold assurance! :D
totally needed that! good to know it’s not me who messed things up! hee hee!

sigh, if only all blog posts appeared in google, instead or just the blog post heading and the blog url!! i can live with a short url, no problem!!
but i miss beind led to my blog posts for several search terms. :(

    > if Google finds two pages with same content, it randomly chooses one .. giving priority to ones which are deeper in directory.

these are called “Supplemental Results”, not exactly relevant to this particular topic.

according to the google guy this might be an issue (I dunno if it is really):

    Supplementary results?

Matt Cutts: Not too bad, but WP does suffer a bit from the fact you can get to a post from 3-4 different ways.

    > I came up with an Idea to use text widget instead of category widget and put links to categories with nofollow ugc tag in them

totally absurd and nonsense per se anywhere else, since it’s obviously defeating purpose of auto-archives used as an aid for navigation.

however, in view of hijacked by Matt Taggegories within the post meta (leading into notorious Global Tags™), and in absence of robots.txt control,

this is, in fact, just an excellent workaround here on wrperdoss.com!

    — definitely should work for the most of folks with about five constant cats.

good for letting us know about the text widget thing! will be good for my future art blog, as i won’t need too many cats there! :D

(now, only if we had a drop-down text widget! )
