Google Maps API doesn't work
-
I run two sites for community groups (for free), both based in the same building. I’ve tried to add the new Google Maps API to the contact widget for each site. It worked first time on one site but on the other site I have tried three times now and it simply rejects the API key each time. Anyone know how to fix this? It used to be easy and 100% reliable to add a map, why does Google have to make it difficult and unreliable … perhaps WordPress could have a moan at them for us!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You are talking about this widget? https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/contact-info/ Have a look at the troubleshooting section a little further down the page.
While I was in the Customizer the API was rejected on my test site. Then I added a wildcard asterisk at the end of the site URL when I included an HTTP restriction to my site.
Let us know how that goes.

NB I agree with the “perhaps WP could have a moan at them for us” and have left this tagged for Staff attention.

Hi folks, can we get more specifics? Let us know what error you were getting and what you had entered into the maps. We’ll test it out and see if we can figure out what’s causing it to stop. Thanks!

While in the Customizer I added the Contact Info widget https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/contact-info/ using the current default address displayed there.
I signed into Google and created an API key for that address and pasted the API key into the line in the Contact Info widget.
Still in the Customizer it tried to resolve the map, but I ended up with an error along the lines of “this site is not authorized…”
Returning to the Google API Manager and added my test site URL with an asterisk at the end and the API map showed up.
I can try testing again with a different map address and API key later.
I agree with @ldhorton that embedding a Google map in the contact info widget has become complicated and now requires a Google account and API key to do so. It would be awesome if it were possible to simply add the Google maps embed code instead.
Thanks for listening.

Now with Google maps embed code instructions https://en.support.wordpress.com/google-maps/ :)

@justjennifer I haven’t been able to duplicate this yet with any addresses I’ve tested. :/
@ldhorton I’m wondering if it’s a character in your address.. any special characters other than letters and numbers?
