Google only showing 1 page of my site

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi folks. A few months ago I followed the (very helpfull) instructions I received here for registering my URL with Google as described here https://wordpress.com/support/webmaster-tools/ Now, when I type the entire URL into Google it shows only the last page of my site. Is this because this page is the only one getting any traffic?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me on this one.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Do you mean when you do a site: search, like https://www.google.co.za/search?q=site%3Ahttps%3A%2F%2Fwrenguitarworks347343029.wordpress.com%2F?

I’m guessing that means that’s the only page on your site that’s indexed by Google, but that’s really just a guess. Without direct access to Google’s search indexes there’s no way to tell for sure.

Have you tried other search terms relevant to your site to see if it comes up for those?

For a search engine to effectively index your site it needs two things (over-simplifying here, but these are the most important): The first is good quality content. Google can’t index something that isn’t there, and it’s not going to index something that isn’t relevant to stuff people search for.

Second, the site has to be active. Google wants recent content, as recency implies relevance. But your site only has a few static pages, most created in December last year, with a couple more in February and a couple more in April. Meanwhile your site has no blog posts at all.

From a search engine’s perspective, that means your site has a bunch of content that was published a while ago, and that is likely already outdated, so it’s not going to spend too much time crawling your site to index it.

This is simple to fix, though – you just need to show Google your content is relevant. First, go through your pages and check which of them might be better suited as posts. As a general guideline, the only pages on your site should be ones containing information that’s “permanent”, e.g. an About page, contact details, etc.

Anything that can be classified as “news”, anything that’s date-specific, should be posts instead. And each time you publish a new post, we ping all the big search engines to let them know so they’ll come index it. In other words, the more posts you publish, the more often we ping the search engines, and the quicker and more thoroughly your site gets indexed.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.

Hi Kokkieh … thanks so much for your response … much appreciated!

I’m wondering if the reason that one page is showing up when I type the main URL into Google … is that it is a page that features other guitar builders as well as myself, and because of that, is the only page getting any kind of traffic. I was thinking of announcing my new site on Facebook to drive some traffic to the homepage and see if that helps.

I take your point about the site being static, therefore not getting any weight on Google. It is definitely not a blog that would be more active. On the other hand, I have been tweaking it literally every week to get it to the point where I feel it is ready to present to the public. My old website was very similar and showed up very prominently when searching under any of the logical search phrases. I was also hoping that the hundreds of photos with meta-descriptions would help give the site weight too.

Did you old site happen to use the same address, or do you still own the old address? If so, and if you’re using the same content and page names, there may be options for redirecting to the new site.

Otherwise, we do have some traffic tips here:
