Google Publicized Posts Not Showing Post Images
-
Hello,
I would like to report a problem where my blog posts that are automatically publicized to Google+ (https://plus.google.com/104249721225967635557/posts) stopped showing the images that are in my blog posts, and instead it shows my Blavatar/Gravatar image with each publicized post.
The last time that an actual blog post image was shown on a publicized post on Google+ was back in December 13, 2014 (https://plus.google.com/104249721225967635557), and this problem happened a few days before that as well.
Is this a bug or did Google and/or WordPress make this change intentionally?
All of my blog posts normally have at least one image that I either add using the Zemanta browser extension for Firefox or I manually add them myself, almost always as linked/hot-linked images from Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons/Wikia/Flickr/and more, and this used to work without problem usually except for the occasional problems as Google and/or WordPress makes new changes.
Thank you,

We have no control over the images any other social networks chooses to display or when they choose to flush their image caches. We really only send them the URL of the post, and they hunt through that for the excerpt and images to include. Does this help?

Hello Timethief,
Thank you I glanced at the support page before creating this post, but this has worked for over a year without problems mostly; and that is why I made this topic so I can find out from the staff whether they and/or Google made changes recently that caused this sudden change because normally it would use the image that I have at the top of each post. ;)
I am just curious why this stopped working, then started back working, then stopped working again recently; I am sure that they will have an answer.

Hi there,
I checked your posts via Google’s own Data Testing Tool, and found that Google does see an image when crawling your post (e.g. http://johnjronline.wordpress.com/2014/12/12/12-12-2014-dream-dillon-the-hacker-and-captain-hook/) as seen here:
Scroll down to “image:” at the bottom.
For some reason Google+ is deciding not to use that image in the post previews. If they were crawling for that image and it didn’t exist, I might be able to help troubleshoot this, but as you can see Google is grabbing your image, but it is not appearing in the preview. It would be best to contact Google regarding this.
I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

Hello Gracejiyoung,
Thank you, that answers my question, so you did give me all the help that I needed; and so this topic is now resolved, thank you. :)
I will probably use the Google Feedback Button and if I am lucky, which I am not, they/the Google AI/Bot/what/whoever might fix this (probably not, they seriously need actual support, they should/could learn a few things from WordPress about support). :D

Generally speaking, hotlinked images eg Zemanta are not picked up when we share with social networks. Only uploaded images are. Sometimes not even them, if you’ve edited the post to add them after publication. The only thing you can do is upload directly and set a Featured Image in every post, whether or not your theme uses them.

Hello Raincoaster,
Thank you for the suggestions, and for the extra information. :)
I just find it odd that it used to work then it stopped recently, I reported it to them, but it is not a big problem for me fortunately since I do not even really use Google+ (I have it because it was almost forced on us by Google, and so I decided to let WordPress.com publicize my posts to it instead of letting it sit there unused and empty :D) or any other social network; and I have no plans to stop hot-linking images with Zemanta or manually and my over 1,000 posts all have a hotlinked image instead of an image directly uploaded using the Media Library. ;)

Easy come, easy go I guess. Let us know if you learn anything else or need any more info from us on this issue.

Hello,
Oui, ça va, ça vient. ;)
I doubt that I will learn anything since Google never responds to feedback button reports, at least in my experiences, but if I do I will try to remember to let you know.
I will report this to them again. :D
Thank you,
-John Jr
