google reporting hundreds of 404 errors on my site

  google reporting 404 errors for .menu

  I’m using the Grisaille theme on my wordpress site and have recieved hundreds of 404 errors from Google with almost all pointing to .menu. For example some of the URL’s are:

  2012/09/30/race-review-walk-to-defeat-als-2012/.menu
  2012/11/02/slow-down-to-speed-up/.menu
  2012/09/27/how-to-avoid-the-stress-of-training/.menu

  These aren’t URL’s that I’ve added and must be an issue with the wordpress menu plugin, theme, or some other underlying code. How can I remove these issues?

  Hi there,

  I’d be happy to try to help with these odd Google links. I did a couple of Google searches for your site, and didn’t get any with the .menu links. Could you tell me where you are seeing these and what you are searching for when they are returned?

  I added my site to my Google webmaster tools account. When I look at the crawl error report its currently showing 320 404 not found errors. All of these end with the .menu extension. I’ve look in all the CSS on the site as well as the URL’s themselves and I just can’t find anything with ./menu. I don’t see these on any of the other sites I have in my account but this is my only wordpress site.

  There are even some recent ones that show up from the past couple of days like:

  page/3/.menu
  tag/felt-z100-review/.menu
  2013/02/03/long-runs-and-overnight-compression-sleeves/.menu
  tag/mind-over-matter/.menu
  sydneys-page/.menu

  They appear to be from Feb 8th and 9th so not sure if it took some time to clean up or if there is still a problem.

  Hi there,

  I think it’s likely Google is hanging on to cached versions of these pages and needs to update itself. I would expect them to slowly disappear over time. Let me know if that doesn’t happen.
