Google Response: Bitacle.
-
Hiya Peeps
I received response from Google to: Notification of bitacle TOS violation. WP Moderators: protocol? Do I post entire response with links, details, my reply to them or summarize? It’s a tad longish, don’t want to upset any Forum rules, etc. Which way –full version or short?
What’s with the message??? When I went to post this I got message from “bb” asking: if I was sure I wanted to post. I clicked on *Back button and lost whole thing. Is it new? It is annoying.

A website, some think in Spain, that is lifting whole pages from blogs, incl WP, posting on his site with AdSense –without attribution or permission. Threads on this involve lots of bloggers, all over the Net, this Forum.
-
A news aggregator (sp)? Aren’t those legal? I’ve noticed I’m on several of those. Do they link back or make it like it’s their own?
-
Hit *Search for answers. There is deep angry debate whether it’s legal or theft for profit.

Thanks, Podz. I wanted to post AS IS and with my reply, but wasn’t sure, since it’s not short and didn’t know if links are allowed. Okay, I’ll copy/paste here.

Podz or WP Moderators:
Following is Google correspondence – if you see/have any problem with any part: delete, or feel free to instantly delete entire; send me e-mail.~MY E-MAIL TO GOOGLE Mon, 25 Sep 2006
Hi Google Team:Whole lot of people –including advertisers and you, getting ripped off.
-Violation: A man, we think he’s in Spain, is taking intellectual property, content of many WordPress.com blogs, NEW YORK TIMES, BBC, WASHINGTON POST, Weather, more, and putting AdSense on his website; others’ content to use for AdSense ads.
-Google search: bitacle.org
-WP: http://stopbitacleorg.wordpress.com/WP bloggers, techies, et al, are posting in Forum and creating defenses. I am not a techie so I don’t get all the tech aspects, I just know WP bloggers: he has refused to stop. Know…your TOS, ethics, AdSense rules, etc., on behalf of Many WP publishers and probably Blogger writers also…don’t imagine NY Times or BBC are too happy either. So: will you stop him –at least strip his use of AdSense?

# # #–I was not impressed or amused. Google shuts down AdSense accounts instantly for click fraud–on NO Notice –without even a warning or e-mail reply; everyone/anyone else harmed can spin?
I wrote again:~MY REPLY TO GOOGLE Mon, 2 Oct 2006
Thank you for replying.I consider your reply: inadequate. He is using/taking entire posts from others’ websites, then putting on his website without attribution AND: adding AdSense. Victims of his theft: will each deal with him/situation in their own way.
Not to be rude, but nobody asked Google for copyright law. THAT is not the issue. Google: recognize he has taken others’ work to profit from AdSense. YOU control AdSense –not him, not the act, not the material.
If you shut his AdSense account you remove his motivation for stealing. Answer you sent: corporate evasive non-responsive worthless –and you know it. When you receive this e-mail: give it to your boss –keep moving it UP the chain of authority until one of you recognizes what’s going on, shuts his AdSense account.
There’s lots of talk about Google –doing weasel things like this –to make money –indifferent to theft. Hell: he’s got NY TIMES on his “website”
–does he own that newspaper? –The weather station –Washington Post? Does NY TIMES have to send you “proof” he doesn’t have right to reprint?Drop the coy act. Money he generates –more important to you than ethics??? I will post your “response” in Forums, websites getting ripped off. You can deal with THEM –and justify allowing a thief to have an AdSense account.
# # #–To lift what someone else wrote, slap it up on his website: It takes 30 -60 seconds. Gonna take LOTS of time, e-mails, Cash to stop him, thanks to Google. My opinion: each writer who has had their material lifted should sign a petition, choose one lead writer, contact BBC, NY TIMES, WASHINGTON POST to join forces –to stop Google and/or bitacle. Otherwise: each is inventing the wheel, alone.
If Google sends another reply, I’ll post.

looks ok to me… like netvibes ecosystem. And this is also a personalized start page. I dont know if we should panic. Our feeds will always show the full content. Any number of people can read them anywhere. What is all the ruckus about as long as they link back to our blogs? Perhaps our traffic will reduce..but that is always the case with feeds, right?
-
-Copyright:
that’s the point –he’s using them without permission.-“full content”:
I think you can *Search forum and find ways to prevent full post in feed.-“they” “link back to our blogs”:
“they” is a man, in Europe, with a website –who isn’t linking ‘back’ to anybody; he isn’t asking for permission to reprint –he just lifts.
“rukus”: what you researched, found pictures & links, edited, wrote, posted –on Blog you worked to create –he’s using to make money, off AdSense. Are you getting credit/attribution –traffic –new readers –comments –half the money? = “rukus” -
You know that Adsense checks for clicks? And that a LOT of clicks will get his account suspended? No cash – suspension.
Shame no-one does… ;) -

At least you got a response from Google. :(
They’re seeing it as you’re complaining about bitacle copying just your content. You have to stress that they’re copying a lot of folk’s content, not just yours.

~Drmike:
Do you get impression that I am protesting for myself??? That is surprising –I protested: “WP AND Blogger writers, NY TIMES, website publishers, WASHINGTON POST, others…”
–I even said I would post reply in WP Forum. Did you read above letters carefully? To be candid, I don’t even know if he is using MY content, I checked only briefly –I don’t find it useful to learn negative things over which I a.)have no control b.)cannot change.
–Heck, I don’t KNOW he’s ripping me off, my issue: Google’s ethics. I have AdSense on a blog –I’m about to send them notice of removal –for their failure –to take Any action on Notice of theft.
–How hard is it, to look at his website, see the material, NY TIMES, etc., look at this, numerous other Forums & comments –listed in THEIR own engine and GET IT –that material on his website is published without ATTRIBUTION, violating copyright, no statement of permission. Yet: they are complicit, in failing to control what IS under their control, which would remove his motivation. That’s appalling.
Therefore, I think WP should create a petition
Petition: if WP is about to enable ads on blogs and WP is respected in the techie world, what impact would it have –if say, 100,000 WP bloggers demanded Google would NOT get WP account/access to WP blogs unless theya.) Shut bitacle’s AdSense account
b.) Shut any AdSense account that uses blog content without full attribution and/or a statement of permission from author
c.) Get ethics –for THEMSELVES–If they got a petition with 200 –300,000 sigs? It could just be a sticky, on front of Every Forum…word spread by links…picked up by mainstream media….

You know that Adsense checks for clicks? And that a LOT of clicks will get his account suspended? No cash – suspension.
Shame no-one does… ;)I am currently clicking the ads on my latest entry at Bitacle. You are welcome to join me.
BTW, nice move on the autotext that’s getting served to them instead of my feed:
Bitacle sucks, try Netvibes, Bloglines, or WordPress instead.
WP isn’t a very good feed aggregator, but we’ll let that go :)
-
FWIW, I got the same response from Google, and I am hanging onto it for future use.
I, too, was greatly disappointed in the response, but recognize it is a possible way to deal with the problem.
-
Do you get impression that I am protesting for myself
No, but the response that you got from Google suggests that they may have.
Please remember that the first level response that Google replies with is almost always cut and paste to the best fit that they can.
-
~Drmike: Okay, thought you misunderstood my position.
“response that Google replies with”
–I didn’t/don’t know what Google policy is about replies, I only know THAT answer ticked me off. –Reeked of ‘weaselism’ –irresponsible and unacceptable. If/when Google sends another, I’ll post it also.
