Google scholar

Is there any hope of making wordpress.com coordinate better with Google Scholar? Scholar *requires* certain meta tags, and wordpress.com currently doesn’t support that.
A growing number of open-access online journals would really, really benefit from this.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no blogger access to metadata here as WordPress.COM is multiuser blogging platform. That access is possible on WordPress.ORG installs only at this time. See here please http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

I just added Business Ethics Journal Review to JURN, if that’s any consolation. I recently had a big push to index open business ejournals, but seem to have missed yours until now.

Could you explain a bit more about how you envision Google Scholar integrating with WordPress.com, and how you would use it here?
I’m going to move this thread to the Ideas forum. Having said that, I’d be happy to keep this discussion going as it’s an interesting concept (I’ve used Google Scholar a lot in the past myself), though right now I can’t quite visualize what the implementation would look like.

Hi:
Well, I run a peer-reviewed journal, hosted on WordPress.com. But Google Scholar WON’T ever index our journal, because we don’t have the right META tags (because wordpress.com won’t permit it, as far as I can see). This almost certainly means we’ll have to leave WordPress within the year… Google Scholar is just too important.
Thanks,
Chris -
So you’re not concerned with embedding content or anything, it’s just about the meta tags?
Do you happen to know what Google Scholar is looking for that we don’t provide? What would you add to a meta tag if this was a self-hosted site?
Once I have more concrete information, I can pass it along and see if we can work something out for you, because this does sound like a good idea if it’s possible to do.

Not sure what you mean by embedding content. We post new content blog-style, with downloadable PDFs included:
http://businessethicsjournalreview.comHere is Google’s page of inclusion criteria.
http://scholar.google.es/intl/en/scholar/inclusion.html#indexingYou need to be able to do meta tags that give e.g. name = “citation_author”
-
Yeah, that all makes sense now. I wasn’t sure if you were just wanting the site to be indexed or if you were wanting to somehow incorporate Google Scholar onto your site.
I’ll take a look at those links and pass them along. Thanks!

Thanks very much. (I know I’m not the only one having this problem — lots of new journals are sprouting online, and WordPress.com is a very attractive hosting solution… except for this problem!)

I’ve passed the idea along. I’m not really sure what’s possible given our limitations on editing meta tags, but if I hear anything concrete from our developers, I’ll be sure to let you know.

One of our developers just let me know that it’s unlikely that this will be implemented on general WordPress.com sites in the near future. If this is a must-have, you might consider either the WordPress VIP program, or if that’s not in your budget, you might look at moving your journal to a self-hosted WordPress installation.
Sorry I couldn’t make this happen this time around. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
-
Ah, OK.
No, we’re a nonprofit, self-funded. VIP is way out of our league. We’ve had offers from other organizations to host us. But we love WordPress.com. Too bad.
Thanks again! -

That’s what I thought. Thanks for checking.
