    He’s got a VIP blog, so he is not subject to our restrictions. VIP blogs cost $600 US to set up and $200 per month to maintain.

    @esoriano
    Here is the link to the specifics http://wordpress.com/vip-hosting/

    … * $600 to setup your site and $300 a month hosting fee.
    Because of the nature of this program it is not open to the general public, it is intended for existing high-profile publishers, or startups that we have a good deal of confidence in. You may be a good candidate for VIP hosting if, for example, you get more than 500,000 pageviews a month on your blog. Pricing may be flexible depending on your circumstances.
    We only want to do a handful of these, so we can’t accept everyone who applies. That said, don’t be shy, we’re always interested in meeting new and interesting folks. You can send us an email at (email visible only to moderators and staff) if you’d like to apply.

    They put the price up again! I really am shocked they’re getting so many applications they feel that’s necessary, but they must.

    thanks!

    i’ve already emailed WP.

    If you were in my place, would you change to VIP?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Of course not. It’s far too expensive.

    If I wanted to avoid the restrictions WP.com places on our blogs here and I had no technical skills myself, I’d hire a techy to do this for me and pay for hosting from a reputable host, and it would cost me less than $50 per month.

    After all, we already have a search widget that works just fine on our blogs, and we do okay on Google. Be aware that moving off WordPress is going to cost you all of the readers who come to your blog through the tag system, the Next Blog feature, tag surfer, Top Blogs, Top Posts, etc. And you will rank far lower in Google searches, because you won’t have the cross-linking advantages of the tag pages at WordPress.com.

    It all depends how important those things are to you.

    @esoriano
    Hell no! None of my blogs get more than 500,000 pageviews a month. And frankly, I’m surprised to hear that yours is in that league.

  • Unknown's avatar

    do you mean its not worth it? and to timethief, i dont know if esoriano.wordpress.com is in that league, really.

    btw, i got a failure notice from the email that i just sent to inquire about the VIP account.

    As raincoaster points out the search function on our blogs picks up all key words and post tiles. I have no difficulty at all using the Google search engine to find whatever else I need. Also I enjoy the benefits of (1) not having to become “geeky” and (2) getting blog traffic from the wordpress.com category tag page system free of charge.

    I do not think the VIP program is worth it. It’s way too expensive. But I also believe they cut deals for people if the promotional value of having them at WP.com is big enough; you would need several million hits per month to be in that league. At least a hundred thousand hits per day, I’d think.

    As for moving off WordPress.com, it depends what you want. If you want javascript or embeds and they are more important to you than keeping your hits high, then moving off WP is probably the way to go. If your hits are more important than any particular functionality that we don’t have, staying here is your best option, because our blogs do very well in search engines because of the way WP.com has structured them.

    the thing is this, i have a domain (efsoriano.com) which is not yet used. i want to use it and replace esoriano.wordpress.com and still be on wordpress community. i am not at all ‘obsessed’ with additional features that WP dont have. what matters to us most is we reach greater number of people to visit the blog. our concern is, if we change domain name and still be on WP community, will our stats go back to scratch or will it just continue our current status?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Your wordpress stats don’t start again from zero, but as far as Technorati blog ranking is concerned, you’ll start again from zero. Same with Google I believe. It took me four months to get back to the same ranking on Technorati that I had before the change to raincoaster.com, but not so long to get back my google juice. My page rank, however, is still lower than the 6 that I used to have.

  • Unknown's avatar

    It used to be 100,000 page views a month instead of now 500,000. :) But email Matt and see if he approves you for VIP Blogging.

    You’re welcome and BTW the three bloggers who helped you in this thread are women.

    Yeah, but we don’t hold that against you. :)
