Google Verification

    Hello,
How can I verify on google?

“Once you verify that you are the site owner, we can provide you with comprehensive statistics and error information about the pages in your site. If you are unable to verify, you can still use the webmaster tools, submit Sitemaps and see detailed information about those Sitemaps as well as basic information about your site.

We offer two methods of verification. You can either upload an HTML file with a name that we specify or you can add a meta tag to your site’s index file. Choose your preferred method below” …
I can’t upload anything to WP, can I add the meta inf. – if yes, how?

    Greets, Boris

what you do is create a page on your blog that is named whatever they specified for the HTML file. Once you have verified the blog with Google, you can delete the page.

Oh cool! I’d been wondering about this. Thanks for asking, Boris! Thanks for answering, Judy!

no problem. It’s something i found in a forum post somewhere ages ago (probably long lost to easy searching). I’ve done it myself, and it works just fine.

Yes, you can delete the page, but perhaps it might be best to leave it there, otherwise Google will unverify your site pretty soon.

You can always reverify at that point, but as I understand it, there is a factor in the Google ranking based on the longevity of your site.

That’s because most spam sites are new and short-lived. If your site comes and goes on Google, then its ranking may be penalised.

So how do you leave a Google verification page in place, without making it visible in the top header of your site ?

Easy. Make it a sub-page of one of your other pages. You can then either choose to leave a discreet link to it at the bottom of that page, or you might not choose to leave a link at all.

That latter option does leave a slight risk that Google may not be able to find it, though, next time it crawls your site.

I made mine into private pages and my blogs get crawled regularly. AFAIK there’s really no reason to fret about this. It works very well here on my wordpress.com blogs and also on my hosted worpress install too. :)

I just published my writeup here:

(only to discover in the forums indeed that several people had found out the same thing already)
