Google warning ‘Image size smaller than recommended size’
-
Got this in the email today saying it is affecting 28 pages. I’ve got a couple of problems with this.
1) Most of the pages they’re telling me don’t even have images on them
2) The image looks good to me on PC and mobile, so what exactly is the problem? Can’t I have pictures the size that I want them? How should I go about resolving this, especially when many pages don’t even have images!!

Hi there!
What’s the address of the site you’re working on?

Hi,
koreangrammardifferently.wordpress.com. Out of 28 pages flagged, two specific URLS flagged by Google AMP was:
I just don’t understand, they don’t even have pictures in them.

When a post doesn’t have any images, the site icon gets used instead for search engine listings, share previews on social media, etc. But I see your site icon is at the size we recommend of 500x500pixels.
So these errors from Google are likely just false positives. From my own experience I can tell you Google Search Console often decides something is broken when everything on the site is working exactly as it should. If I had to guess, their engineers were likely tweaking something in their algorithms, or else they decided to adjust some arbitrary rule for what they feel the ideal size is for images in search listings.
But unless you actually notice something broken, like your site no longer appearing in search results even if you Google the URL directly, or search engine referrals in your stats page dropping to zero all of a sudden even though you post regularly, it’s mostly safe to ignore these types of warnings.
