google webmaster setup with newly mapped domain name

    Hello,

I have been using wordpress.com for more than 2 years and recently i have purchased the domain mapping service and now my blog url is updated from ykyuen.wordpress.com to eureka.ykyuen.info.

Here comes to my question. Before the domain mapping, i have a google webmaster profile of ykyuen.wordpress.com which already stored a lof of traffic data and well indexed by google. now i setup another webmaster profile of eureka.ykyuen.info.

so should i remove the ykyuen.wordpress.com profile? if i remove it, will it affect my google search ranking?

    Thanks

    Regards,
    Kit

Hi Kit. I do believe you have to replace your Google Webmaster Tools ID in your WordPress.com dashboard, yes. You can’t have two ID’s on a single WordPress.com blog unfortunately.

I have no idea if it will have any impact on your Google Search ranking, but yes, it may affect your ability to manage the old __.wordpress.com address via Google Webmaster Tools.

    Thanks for your reply.

Actually i have updated the Google Webmaster Tools ID to the new profile. but interestingly the old profile (ykyuen.wordpress.com) is still working.

i have also sent an enquiry email to the webmaster team. let me update this thread once i get their reply.

interestingly the old profile (ykyuen.wordpress.com) is still working.

In my case, it worked for a week or two, then it stopped working and asked me to verify my address one more time.

I find this post about how to move your old webmaster tools profile to a new one.
    Domain Mapping, Webmaster Tools Verification

Unfortunately, in my old webmaster tools profile, i cannot change the url address.
it said “Restricted to root level domains only”.

And i found that the the recent visits has dropped about 1/3 after the domain mapping.

Do i need to purchase the site redirect in order to have the 301 redirect? would this help google to migrate my old webmaster profile to the new one?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have sent a support email to the wordpress team and they think that purchasing a domain redirect is unnecessary because the domain mapping already serves the redirect function.

so probably i can only wait for the new webmaster profile to grow.

yes – The old addresses will continue to work if you do domain mapping – so the extra redirect is not needed.
