Google Webmaster Tools connection not working & incorrect instructions
-
I believe I followed the instructions for a Google Webmaster Tools connection to my blog (BelmontFarmersMarket.WordPress.com), but when I clicked Verify on the Google page, I got the error ” Verification failed for http://belmontfarmersmarket.wordpress.com/ using the Meta tag method (less than a minute ago). We couldn’t find the verification meta tag.”
Problem #1 is that I wasn’t using the Meta tag method, I was using the recommended HTML tag method. Problem #2 is that your instructions say “Select Alternate Methods, where you will be presented with several verification methods. The option you want is “HTML Tag”. ” But the choice “HTML Tag” is only available under Recommended Method.
So I’m a little confused. Can you see if I did this right? And unless I read it wrong, you should fix your instructions. Thanks.
PS: If I make this work, will it still work if I register the domain BelmontFarmersMarket.org with you for this blog?

Hi there!
Problem #1 is that I wasn’t using the Meta tag method, I was using the recommended HTML tag method.
I agree that Google’s verbiage here could be better. It looks like the HTML tag method and the Meta tag method are the same:
Problem #2 is that your instructions say “Select Alternate Methods, where you will be presented with several verification methods. The option you want is “HTML Tag”. ” But the choice “HTML Tag” is only available under Recommended Method.
Sorry you had trouble with the Google Webmaster Tools directions. I just walked through the process again with my own site, and under Recommended Method I’m still only seeing “HTML File Upload”, but I’ve updated the document to reflect that the “HTML tag” option may be in either location.
So I’m a little confused. Can you see if I did this right?
Unfortunately, I can’t check if you did this correctly, but the Webmaster dashboard should show an error if the verification process didn’t work.
If I make this work, will it still work if I register the domain BelmontFarmersMarket.org with you for this blog?
Yep! You’ll just want to go verify the new domain for your site once you have it set up.
Let me know if I can help further!
