Google webmaster verification
-
Hi,
I went to google.com/addurl and followed the instructions (typing in my address: johnwilpers.wordpress.com) and then they asked me to verify the site in order to best use the Webmaster tools.
They offered two options: add a meta tag or upload an HTML file.
The meta tag instructions asked me to: Copy the meta tag listed below and paste it in your site’s home page in the first <head> section of the page, before the first <body> section.
<meta name=”verify-v1″ content=”cCCIZsW+hb+JG3Q7SGVyoo+l2yTHo522BEzfWkBLrY4=” />.But I couldn’t figure out where to access the HTML for my home page (I could find the HTML for my “About” page).
The HTML file upload instructions were: Using any text editor, create the file that we ask for and make sure to save it with the exact name we ask for (for example, google11e5844324b7354e.html). The filename is case-sensitive and must have an “.html” extension. The file itself can be empty – we don’t read the content of the file, but only check to see that it exists in the specified location. Upload the file to your webserver to the location we specify. Generally, this is the root folder for your site.
But I have no idea where the root folder might be.
Anybody have the same problem and solve it?
Thanks!
John

We have no access to the .php files or root directory at wordpress.com but someone did come up with a clever and simple workaround. Follow the links in roadsofstone’s post:

You can create a Page in your WP.com blog with the name of “google11e5844324b7354e”. Then just enter blank text or whatever in the body. Save that page.
Then click on “reverify link” on the Google webmaster dashboard and it will work. You can now hide that page. You’ll need to unhide it, and then reverify every couple months/weeks or so.
You don’t need to do anything fancy, just make that page with that title and it’ll work. I’ve been doing that for months.

You can also create a regular “Post” with the name that Google wants to see. That avoids hiding and un-hiding a Page whenever Google needs to verify your access to the tools. The only problem with a Post is that, ordinarily, it will appear on the day you create it and confuse your readers.
To avoid that you can use a little-known feature. When you create a post, under “Publish Status” you can hit the “edit” feature next to “Publish Immediately.” That lets you set a different date for the post, so it won’t appear as a new Post today. It will appear with whatever date you want.
My “Google post” with its weird title is dated to be the first in my blog’s history, so even though it was recently created, no one ever got to see it — except Google. It’s always visible to Google, and because it’s so “old” there’s no need to hide it.
