Goran theme clipping words from titles
-
Dear forum members,
I am currently using the Goran theme for my Open Rights Group Birmingham blog and have noticed that the wording of the main site and blog post titles appears clipped. For example, the site title reads as follows:
Open Rights
Group
Birmingha
mThe last letter of the word Birmingham is dropped, which doesn’t look great. This happens on my laptop browsers whenever the screen is anything less than full size. I have the problem intermittently when viewed on mobile browsers. The site title is resized okay but blog post titles can be affected.
Has anyone had similar problems with titles? I am guessing the issue is related to how the them handles responsive design. Any advice on how to fix the problem would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi Francis,
Your title is spread across three lines when viewed on my laptop, as shown here:
However, I replicated the behaviour you described when reducing the size of my browser’s window. You’re therefore right in your guess that this is specific to how Goran adapts to devices of different sizes.
The only way to completely override the theme’s design choice would be with some custom CSS. Adding CSS is one of Custom Design options included in WordPress.com Premium or Business.
If you don’t wish to upgrade, you could consider shortening the title. Would something like OPEN RIGHTS GROUP BHAM work?
Alternatively, a theme with more space for a title may work better for you. Edin is the parent theme to Goran, so it shares a similar design but has more space for a title as the menu is hidden beneath a hamburger icon in the upper right.
You could also have a browse through our repository here for other theme ideas:
Let me know if any of those ideas are helpful to you or if you have further questions/concerns.

Dear siobhyb,
Thanks for your speedy and helpful reply. I’m glad to know the issue is real and isn’t just something which affects my individual setup. For this blog I will experiment with Edin to see if this works better.
Regarding the custom CSS changes, would you be able to recommend any advice on how to fix the issue? I’m keen to learn to learn more and hopefully apply the change in future sites.
Many thanks,
Francis

Hi Francis,
I’m glad Edin seems to be working for you! :)
If you’d like to switch back to Goran and decide to upgrade, then the following snippet could be added to the CSS panel of the WordPress.com Customizer:
@media screen and (min-width: 1230px) { .site-branding { width: 400px; } }The above snippet would widen the title area so that the title isn’t clipped on smaller screens.
We also have a dedicated CSS support forum if you’d like any more specific CSS help. Just let us know.
