Graphics suddenly not showing actual size

  • Unknown's avatar

This morning I noticed that when a graphic on my blog is clicked on to show it at a larger, actual, size that it no longer works. Graphic show up as they used to but at a much reduced size. I had thought this was just the blog I wrote this morning but it has affected all graphics.
Was there a default setting that has been switched on somehow, or has something changed in the way WordPress now handles graphics.
Here is how I typically insert a graphic. It is to show the graphic smaller to fit on the page but then when clicked on to show the graphic at its full size.

click on graphic to see it larger

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi starwalk,

I noticed that when a graphic on my blog is clicked on to show it at a larger, actual, size that it no longer works.

I’ve had a look at the night sky image on this post:

    https://bobs-spaces.net/2019/06/07/venus-meets-the-7-sisters/

When clicked, I’m seeing a larger version of the image with the option to zoom in to full size:

If you aren’t seeing the same on your side, can you confirm which browser and operating system you are using? Both pieces of information can be found on supportdetails.com.

You can either reply here or start a chat if you prefer :)

Windows 10 using Chrome Browser, current version (not sure version number). Have always used Chrome. The inserted image is always set to medium size. Actual graphic size is 1526 x 772 but when I click on the inserted image it shows the graphic but not at the correct full size. It does allow for a zoom in but still not at full size.

    Hi starwalk,

Thanks — I’ve done some testing but haven’t been able to replicate this on the latest version of Chrome (v74) on Windows 10. Your exact browser version can be found by visiting supportdetails.com.

Do you have any browser extensions or ad blockers installed? If so, please try disabling them to see whether that makes a difference.

Does the problem also occur in other browsers or just Chrome?

    Thanks for prompt replies.
The problem seems to be only on my laptop – but has never happened before. I have always, for the most part, done my blogs on the laptop.
On my desktop (Windows 10, Chrome browser, 33″ monitor) the graphic shows up full size but without the zoom in feature.
Like I said this has never happened before on my laptop so there might be something that I inadvertently changed and didn’t realize it. I’ll get on the laptop again and see what I can find.

  • Hi there,

Does your laptop by any change have a ultra-high resolution screen? It’s possible Chrome changed the way they handle images on Retina and similar high-res screens, causing the “full size” version to be scaled down as a result. Put differently, Chrome is showing it at smaller dimensions in order to show it at the full resolution available on your screen.

Ideally a scaling down like this shouldn’t happen, but it’s not something we have any control over.

Yes that was causing the smaller sized graphics.
I’m embarrassed to say that the problem was that somehow the settings for my Chrome browser, on my laptop, were set to 65%. Once I pumped it back to 100% the problem with too small graphics was resolved. Live and learn!!

I very much appreciate the prompt replies and helpful suggestions. Keep up the good work.
