Gravatar email with mixed case

  For I service I use (HipChat), I was signed up by someone who capitalised the name part of my e-mail address ((email visible only to moderators and staff)) in stead of using all lower-case ((email visible only to moderators and staff)).

  It seems that this service doesn’t do a lower-case operation on the e-mail address before generating the corresponding md5 hash. This means that on that service I don’t have my Gravatar image presented.

  I tried adding the e-mail ‘(email visible only to moderators and staff)’ to my account although the ‘(email visible only to moderators and staff)’ was there already. Gravatar – however – /does/ lowercase the e-mail address, so it seems impossible to add another representation of the same e-mail address.

  I also reported this issue to HipChat, since your documentation clearly states that e-mail addresses need to be trimmed and lower-cased before generating the hash.

  Folling the Robustness principle, would mean that Gravatar allowes for mistakes on the client-side. It would help if I could enter other representations of the same address, since I wouldn’t expect Gravatar to generate hashes for all possible combinations of upper-/lower-case.

  It seems that the example e-mail address I gave is redacted automatically.

  They were “User.Name -at- example.com” and “user.name -at- example.com” respectively.

  Hi there,

  This sometimes happens with Gravatar, and I can fix it for you, but to do that I need to know the actual email address as it was entered, i.e. with the capitalisation.

  Can you please reply with the email address. Make sure to place it on its own line with no other characters like “” or () present. It will be redacted in your view, but I will be able to see it.
