Gravatar image won’t show in WordPress profile; shows elsewhere

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. Filling in my WordPress profile, it says I can add a profile pic through Gravatar. Not so! I created the Gravatar site, uploaded a photo, it seems to be working in general (for example, it shows up on YouTube, and on this forum), but I can NOT get it to show up on my web site. http://www.JenNilesArt.com – some say it takes a while? How long should I wait? The file is small, the rating is set to General, the file name is just one word, and it has the .JPG extension. What else can I do!? thanks

    Site: https://jennilesart.com.
    WP.com: Unknown
    Jetpack: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi! Can you link to a page where the gravatar should appear on that site? I clicked around a bit but did not find one.

Also: be sure the email address you use for the site is the same one on your Gravatar account. You can add another email address to it if needed, then specify a picture for that email.

Thanks for your reply. The emails do match already. And the place that I wanted the image to appear is in my own profile

      within

    my WordPress dashboard.

–Here’s some background: Earlier today I had been looking for info on how to set up my blog, and someone (on some other site) said “go into Discussions…” and regardless of what they were talking about or why I ended up in the Discussions settings section, the point is that while I was looking at that section (still within the WordPress dashboard, mind you), I noticed that in the upper right hand corner is my alleged profile. It says “Howdy Jen Niles” and has a little dropdown menu and it had one of those “mystery person” avatars as my photo, and a chance to edit the profile. I noticed that if I scroll down in the Discussions settings section it said I could add a profile picture through Gravatar. So I went to Gravatar and did all that, but for some reason I still can’t see my photo image in my profile.

Now, you raise a really good point asking me where in my web site this is supposed to show up. Because on my actual live web site I don’t even SEE where this profile and profile pic are supposed to show up!! What is the point of it, even??? What is the point of this internal (?) profile and profile photo? I do wish I could send you a screen shot of what I am talking about because it is hard to describe. I cannot show you a link because it’s within my dashboard which you all cannot see.

I am sorry if none of this makes any sense. I’m trying! I’m very much a WordPress novice. Perhaps you all have the same experience of seeing a “Howdy” message and a profile in the upper right corner *within* your web site’s WP dashboard? Thanks!!!!

  • One thing you can do:

Right-click the image, and open it in a new tab. Then copy that address, and send us that.

And, you can add Gravatars to your site through Settings > Discussion

If you view the original message, you will see that in Settings>Discussion was where all this nonsense began. But when you suggested it, I went back there to look and it seems that those settings pertain to the avatars of OTHER people who post a comment or something. I am referring to the “howdy” profile section in the upper right corner. (Surely you all have the same one?) I did the right click thing you suggested but I don’t know enough about computers to feel SAFE sending you all the image address to a screen shot that is on MY computer (i.e. never uploaded to a site). I don’t know what the risks are with doing that. But since you all have a WordPress dashboard (right?) I am sure you can see the little profile area in the top right that I am talking about. Thanks for trying to help though! I appreciate it.

I did the right click thing you suggested but I don’t know enough about computers to feel SAFE sending you all the image address to a screen shot that is on MY computer (i.e. never uploaded to a site). I don’t know what the risks are with doing that.

What we need is your Gravatar URL – just right click on the image and choose “copy image address” and provide that link here. These links are public and provide zero security issues with your own computer.

For example, this is the URL of my own Gravatar: https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/561be467af56cefa58e02782b7ac7510?s=192&d=mm&r=g

If you’re still having trouble, we’ll need you to take a screenshot of your settings screen so we can check things on our end. If you’re not familiar on how to take a screenshot, this support document will help explain how to make one:

    Take a Screenshot

Then, use a service like Snipboard.io to upload the screenshot and then share the image link from that service here and we’ll take a closer look.

Specifically, we need to see the section of your profile under Users -> Profile where it lists your username and email address. Here’s an example.

Because on my actual live web site I don’t even SEE where this profile and profile pic are supposed to show up!! What is the point of it, even??? What is the point of this internal (?) profile and profile photo?

I did want to clarify this – your Gravatar on your website will show on the front end of your site if you have a blog and make comments to others commenting on your site or if you have a widget set that uses that same information.

    Thanks!

Thanks for telling me about that Snipboard site. Amazing!
Here is the screen shot of the place inside my WP dashboard where there is a profile and a profile pic that I truly don’t know the purpose of right now. And I can’t get my Gravatar pic to show up there:

Now, here is the Gravatar image you asked for:
    https://www.gravatar.com/userimage/107689076/d36992448ae60904a69e33aa8e797e89?size=120

Here is the screen shot of Users section that you asked for:

  • Thanks, we’ll clear the cache for that image.

If you cancel the email address change, what happens?

  • Also, just to confirm:

Now, here is the Gravatar image you asked for:

That was for the blank Gravatar image, correct?

  • Unknown's avatar

No, when I said “Now, here is the Gravatar image you asked for,” I supposedly gave you the actual photo that Gravatar has on file for me. Listen, I truly appreciate your trying to help me, but this is getting me ready to surrender. I have a lot going on here and I cannot for the life of me figure out why this is all so hard. Before I posted today, I checked and saw all three of the Snipboard images were there on their site. If you can’t see them, I don’t know why. But I am caring for an elderly parent right now so I have to go …..thanks again for trying

  • @jennilesart, I can see the snipboard images. And we wanted the URL for the image that didn’t work. Since you gave us the one for the working image, I can confirm this:

    1. Don’t cancel the address change.

    2. The gravatar link you gave us is for the address that is pending. When you fix that, you’ll be set. You’d need to find out why the email is being filtered, or why it’s not being sent in the first place. Your host can help with that when you have time.

    Best wishes!
