gravatar not loading in corporate network

  • Unknown's avatar

Gravatars recently quit loading in our corporate network. Today’s behavior is a timeout. The security operations group has indicated they aren’t blocking the traffic, and the site works fine not through the corporate network. Is perhaps Gravatar blocking the corporate traffic since it probably appears amplified being proxied?

Our traffic would be coming from 216.231.208.128 as I understand it.

  • Hi brantgurga, sorry to hear that. I’ll have our systems team check on this for you. I know they’ll want this information though, so would you mind getting it?

    – Right click and open one of the images in a new tab (or you can open your own gravatar here … if the address you’re getting in a new tab is very different from that, let us know)

    – Find the HTTP headers (here’s how)

    – Reload the image and get a screenshot of the results

You can then upload it to any site and post the link here.

    – Please also confirm whether any of our images on WordPress.com (like the ones in the article there, or anything from https://discover.wordpress.com) are also having trouble loading.

    – Lastly, confirm whether Gravatar.com itself loads for you, or whether it’s just the Gravatars themselves that don’t work.

    Thanks in advance!

    @supernovia
    Thank you for the response.

Regarding opening the image in a new tab: I get one of two behaviors: either no response or the Web filter system indicates a 503 response from your server.

The details on that page are:
    Your IP address: 172.20.66.203
    Your username:
    The URL is: ssl://www.gravatar.com:443/
    Web Filter category: Technology/Internet
    CSX category: none
    Country: None
    Threat Risk: 2
    Response Code: 503

Due to the Threat Risk code, I thought this was our company blocking the traffic, but our security folks indicated this was Gravatar not responding to the requests, not our company blocking anything on this.

When I get the proxy error page response, I have this sample request and response headers:

    Accept: text/html, application/xhtml+xml, image/jxr, */*
    Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate, peerdist
    Accept-Language: en-US
    Connection: Keep-Alive
    Host: http://www.gravatar.com
    User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; Trident/7.0; rv:11.0) like Gecko
    X-P2P-PeerDist: Version=1.1
    X-P2P-PeerDestEx: MinContentInformation=1.0, MaxContentInformation=2.0

    Cache-Control: no-cache
    Connection: close
    Content-Length: 2229
    Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8
    Pragma: no-cache
    Proxy-Connection: close

Discover.wordpress.com does appear to load okay.
http://www.gravatar.com is not loading; resulting in similar Potential Network Error page as the gravatars themselves

  • Thank you :) I have sent an email your way where we can continue this conversation. Write back to me there and let me know if you do not receive it.
