gray scale on header

Hi! I’m pretty new to wordpress so I am not sure if I am doing this correctly. I would like to remove the gray overlay from the twenty seventeen template. I saw a previous forum that suggested copying the following into the CSS field, which is not working. Thanks!

background: none;

Do you have an upgraded site that has CSS editing capability?
