Greetings all. Could somone lend a hand?

I do a lot of artsy stuff for fun and friends. Last week I decided i wanted to attempt to make a website to put some of my fun silliness onto the web. Having never built one before I figured I would be in for a nightmare. It just so happens my hosting company has fantastic tools that simplify the process.

Using wordpress even made life easier and the website was up in no time. Then came getting into customizing it. I did the simplest method I could think of and that’s replace the original textures used in the template and change the text colors with ones to my liking. Its far from perfect but its good enough for the moment till I learn more.

The issue I am facing now is some elements I need to learn more about and that will come with time and effort as i wrap my head around how to do some of this stuff.

I am having difficulty getting pointed in the right direction for the simpler things I want to do.

For instance at the top of my screen is some menu choices, I either want to remove them, Since I use a side bar menu for most navigation, or i want to buttonise them so they don’t look like oddly places words in a random spot on my page. Now I am fairly sure it’s a very simple thing to do for those who know what they are doing, But I am having a very difficult time figuring out how to relate the text to where it is in code that’s putting it there.

I was looking for a visual program that would help me fit all the pieces together in a way I could at least learn how it all works. See my changes as I make them etc etc.. I don’t know if there is even something out there like that. I have not had a lot of luck and the learning process from a cold start to a full run is a lot longer than 5 days and all I want to figure out is how to move 3 words from here to there, has not been as easy as I had hoped.

If you look at my webpage you will see what I mean, the menu choice at the top of the screen under the header.

If you do look please let me know if you see anything blatantly wrong.

    Thank you,
    Jini

You need to make friends over at WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using – you have posted in the wrong forum (see above) – also general titles like “lend a hand” sucks – as the people that are helping you can’t see what type of help you need so you might miss getting help.

When I work on layout and design changes, I usually update the CSS code directly. I don’t really know of a good visual program like what you have described, but one thing that may help you is learning how to use the web inspector tools that come with Chrome and Safari or the Firebug add-on for Firefox. With those tools, you can right-click on an element in the page and select ‘Inspect Element’ and it will show you the corresponding HTML and CSS for the thing you clicked on. Pretty nifty.

I have posted on the other boards right after the bot yelled at me. *smiles* but thats ok.

Thank you deignsimply, I was just starting to play around with the feature in chrome i’ll have to dive deeper into it. It may be just what I need, hardest thing for me was sorting out what was located in witch document.

Thanks again and sorry for the board intrusion.

The web inspector tools are pretty awesome. They are just the thing for finding out *all* the relative CSS rules for an element in one spot. You’ll like them!
