Grid page for selecting categories?

    Hi,

    Several themes offer a grid page. Is it possible to direct the tiles to the various categories I use for my blog, instead of a child page?

    Can you provide an example link so we can see what theme/grid pages you mean? In general it’s not possible to change the underlying way any of the themes work but in some cases there are methods to work around things. In this case I think you’ll end up needing to manually create a static page that features all of your categories, but without a bit more information it’s hard to say for sure.

    Thanks for your reply!

    I’ve found two themes so far that I like and that offer the grid page template:
    Edin
    Goran

    The grid page is intended for drilling deeper into a child page structure, but I would like readers to select a category by clicking the grid tiles. It sure would be nice!

    Ah I see, they’re page templates built into the themes. If you wanted to do something similar with your current theme (nietvandezewereld.nl is using Fresh and Clean) then you’d have to create a page that lists all the categories and update it manually when new ones were added. To get a similar grid layout you’d also have to switch to the text editor and include some inline CSS to style the page elements.

    That’s right. I do use Fresh&Clean right now, but I’m looking for a different one to do some redesigning. So I want to check what layout options I have with the themes I mentioned.

    In both of those themes you can choose the Grid Page template from the Page Attributes box when editing the page (if you can’t see it then check the box in the Screen Options at the top right of the edit page).

    If you don’t set any child pages then you can include code in the text editor a bit like this and both themes will arrange them in the grid layout:

    <div class="grid">
    Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Nam vel turpis. Duis sit amet lectus ac mauris porta viverra. Aliquam erat volutpat. Praesent ipsum pede, pretium sed, congue nec, pretium quis, urna. Suspendisse dignissim, elit in ultrices sollicitudin, nisl est accumsan orci, a venenatis dui mi porta pede. Aenean et pede quis est tincidunt varius.
    </div>
    <div class="grid">Cras aliquet. Integer faucibus, eros ac molestie placerat, enim tellus varius lacus, nec dictum nunc tortor id urna. Suspendisse dapibus ullamcorper pede. Vivamus ligula ipsum, faucibus at, tincidunt eget, porttitor non, dolor. Ut dui lectus, ultrices ut, sodales tincidunt, viverra sed, nisl.</div>
    <div class="grid">Praesent ac quam vulputate felis ultrices scelerisque. Pellentesque habitant morbi tristique senectus et netus et malesuada fames ac turpis egestas. In in arcu. Vestibulum eget nisi quis tellus elementum dapibus. Cras facilisis venenatis libero. Nunc accumsan viverra augue. Suspendisse potenti. Suspendisse eleifend. Maecenas sit amet justo.</div>
    <div class="grid">Quisque quam nisi, mollis quis, sodales ut, rhoncus nec, risus. Class aptent taciti sociosqu ad litora torquent per conubia nostra, per inceptos himenaeos. Proin pede. Aliquam neque tortor, euismod ac, eleifend quis, tincidunt quis, neque.</div>

    I’ve used placeholder text but you could include the links to each of your categories with an image and title and short description of the content if you like.

    Thanks a lot! This seems to be working fine! I’ve replaced the placeholder text with images containing a link to the corresponding category page.

    In the Edin and Goran themes this works fine. There seem to be couple of themes in which the images do not appear in a grid, but in one single column. Could that have something to do with the width of the main (content) column in those themes?
