Guest Posts

From reading the advice of a few others, a common incentive to promote your blog is having a guest post published. How do you go about doing this? Do you submit articles to a more successful blogger, and hope they accept? I’m not quite sure how this works.

    Thanks, Mike

    Hi Mike,
I think that you could invite one or two of your readers (or other people you know) to make a guest post on your blog. Or if you are a regular commenter on someone else’s blog, you might propose an idea to him or her.
You do want to be clear about the terms of the guest posting: you have final approval of the post, whether or not they can post (or re-post) the same article on their blogs, how the guest poster will be featured on your blog…
You might take a look at timethief’s blog. She has been featuring guest bloggers for a while now:

And I suppose you could do cold calls on more successful bloggers and just submit ideas. Sort of like contacting a publisher as an unknown, with your latest idea for the great american novel…

    Hi Tess,

Thanks for your input and advice. I would welcome posters wishing to do a guest article on my blog, though the incentive isn’t too high as I’m a new blogger, not receiving a high volume of traffic.

When accepting a guest poster, I would guess you upgrade their user status to contributor?

Timethief is indeed a helpful blogger, though my niche is obviously completely different – it would be better for myself to work within a community of similar posters, rather than having an influx of one hit wonders.

Cold calling might be a good idea on blogs with similar themes, I think I may try that.

    Thanks again, Mike.

    @NMike
I so not allow any guest author access to my Admin area by making them an official user of my blog but this option is available to you. Until you have built a reader community around your own blog, and have developed relationships with other bloggers within your niche by becoming a regular reader and commenter on their blogs locating others who will become guest bloggers on your blog will not be easy.

I believe these twow posts and my guest blogging policy page may be helpful.

    Hi Mike,

I have never had a guest blogger, but I would hesitate to add someone as a contributor for a one time guest appearance. That is just me, of course, but I would think working via email would be fine. Adding a contributor is not as serious/final/unchangable as adding an editor or co-administrator. Also, I think asking someone to become a contributor might imply that they are making a commitment to make more than one guest post, and I don’t know that I would want to make such a commitment.

Re: timethief, I meant that you might find out what sort of policies she has for guest bloggers because she’s had experience. She invited me to do a post, and I want to, but have not had time to write it up yet!

Re: cold calling, it probably wouldn’t hurt, but I would comment on the blogs you are interested in just so the bloggers get an idea of who you are. Again, that’s just me.

    Hello there,
Hope you are well and happy too. :)

So you’re saying you wouldn’t allow access to guest authours? How else would you allow them to post, simply posting their post yourself, with links to their blog?

I’m a regular commentator on other blogs, though they’re often not hugely successful. I would quite enjoy writing a piece on a successful blog within the same niche, though from what I’ve found so far, I couldn’t find any numerically successful blogs, I appreciated, in the same niche.

Thanks for the info, I shall have a look at those links.

Yes. I would agree with timethief that it’s a better idea to post the guest article yourself. Check out her guest blogging policies.
