Guidance Please? Can I install plug-ins at wordpress.com hosted site?
-
Hi,
I would like to have sidebars on my permalinked pages. Twenty-eleven does not allow this. Sidebars are only on the main page.
I am using twenty-eleven. My site is on wordpress.com and is free blog.
It seems there is a plug-in I can use that will let me add the sidebar without coding, called Twenty-Eleven Theme Extensions (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/twenty-eleven-theme-extensions/)
But I can’t figure out how to install this as my site it says wordpress.com does not allow plug-ins? I can see why wordpress.com doesn’t allow random plug-ins, but this one is supported on a sister site.
So….do I need to host the site elsewhere? If i do that, do I lose all of the dashboard and site stats features?
I am thinking this is a really newbie question and I appreciate your responses.
Thanks so much,
Jen

We cannot edit the underlying code in templates or themes. CSS editing cannot be used to add sidebars to themes that do not already have them.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/Please read this entire section carefully > http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions
There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we cannot install any plugins. They are only for WordPress.org installs.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/There is no upgrade you can purchase for WordPress.com that changes anything stated here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
I suggest you simply choose another theme that does have sidebars on single posts.

Actually, Twenty Eleven has a page template that will display sidebars built in. To make it work, open a page for editing, look for the Page Attributes box, select the “Sidebar Template” option, and save changes.

Wait! I think I spoke to soon :) (I’m blaming Monday morning). My last suggestion was for pages, not posts.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/If you’re interested in adding a sidebar to posts, I agree another theme might be the best option—or, consider sticking with Twenty Eleven and let readers concentrate on the post if they click directly into a specific title.
Most WordPress.com themes do display the sidebar for posts. You can check out all of the themes here:
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/You can try the new live preview option in your Appearance → Themes page to see each theme in action before switching.
