Guided Transfer

Would like to know if the Guided Transfer is the solution for me. I am moving my current ‘WordPress.com’ website to a self-hosted ‘WordPress.org’ site. I am using BlueHost as the domain host, per the suggestion from both WordPress.com and WordPress.org. I’ve tried to transfer my site manually over to my new domain and have had some troubles in my attempts. I would like to know if Guided Transfer will bring in Plug-In’s like BackUpBuddy. The second inquiry I have is whether or not my website will look and navigate identically to how I have it set up on my original (WordPress.com) website. Thanks for your time.

  • Hey there,

It sounds like you’d be a great candidate for guided transfer. The service includes:

    • Installing the WordPress software at your choice of one of our recommended hosts.
    • Transferring over the content from your WordPress.com site.
    • Installing and configuring Jetpack and a few other plugins to provide features that you have been using on WordPress.com.
    • Configuring and testing permissions so that you’ll be able to have one-click installs and upgrades.
    • Switching your domain(s) name server settings to point over to the new site.
    • Answering questions and providing guidance for you on your new WordPress installation for a two week period.

For more information on guided transfers, please visit our support page:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

Alternately, if you want to try to move it over yourself for free, we have support page for that as well:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/

The second inquiry I have is whether or not my website will look and navigate identically to how I have it set up on my original (WordPress.com) website.

There is a self-hosted version of the Boardwalk theme, so we could make the self-hosted version of your site pretty similar to the one hosted at WordPress.com.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

    Hi Darnell,
Thanks for your info. I have multiple domains, will they all be transferred with this one time fee? Do I have to pay again in the future when I add additional domains?
Also, I was wondering if they will install the plug-in BackUp Buddy as well?

    Carol

  • It will be free to transfer your domains to your new host – but you will still need to pay the yearly subscription.

I’m sure our staff can assist you in installing the BackupBuddy plugin, but I’m sure they can also show you have to install it yourself from your end. it should be pretty straightforward. More information on BackupBuddy here:

Is the yearly subscription different from the $127 guided transfer fee? I like creating my domains with WordPress.com. Are you saying, that If I make additional domains within this year, I can get assistance in transferring them? If I subscribe again at the end of my year, is it the same $127 fee?

  • I’m not sure how much domains are at the place you’re moving, but a yearly domain subscription with us is $18 (without private registration). If you decide to register new domains, you should just register them at your new host. Just like here, the subscription will be yearly.

However, I take it you are referring to sites? Yes, you can create a new site with WordPress.com and if you want to transfer the site to another host like you’re doing with this current one, it is a one time fee of $129. Guided transfers are one-time fees, they are not recurring.

I’d like to continue our conversation from a while back. I am interested in doing a guided transfer. I have seven sites that I want to transfer. I am subscribing to multiple sites Bluehost. How do I make sure that all my sites are transferred, I see only the following as my purchase offer:
“Please make sure you’ve selected the blog you wish to transfer away from WordPress.com.” But there are seven sites or blogs for me to choose from. These are the following sites: https://evolvingcreativereflections.wordpress.com/
    https://ecrautumnleaves.wordpress.com
    https://ecrdragonstands.wordpress.com/
    https://ecrevergreentree.wordpress.com/
    https://ecrtheflightofthespirit.wordpress.com/
    https://ecrthewisdomtree.wordpress.com/
    https://creativereflectionsbook2.wordpress.com/
(This last site I haven’t populated yet. It’s waiting for when my second book is ready.)
Even though I know the above are listed as sites at WordPress.com, they are also set up for blogging. I am confused. I want all of my blogs/sites transferred for the one time fee. Please advise.

  • Hi there,

The guided transfer is per blog, so you would have to purchase seven separate guided transfers. However, I obviously wouldn’t recommend that. if your site does not have too much content, then I would suggest exporting the site over to WordPress.org host yourself. I would save guided transfer for blogs that have tons of content that you would feel more comfortable for us to handle.

Let me know if you have any questions with that.

    Thanks!
