Guided transfer for WPEngine
-
I am trying to move my blog from .com to .org and have hosting with WPEngine. From what I can see the guided transfer is not available with this host, is that correct?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes that’s what is indicted here http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
Installing the WordPress software at your choice of one of our recommended hosts.

Perhaps this will help you. Here’s a summary of the steps you need to take to move your content.
WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate.
http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/1. Hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and purchase a domain.
2. Set up a WordPress.org install and equip it with a theme and plugins.
http://wordpress.org/themes/
http://wordpress.org/plugins/3. To move your content you need to create an XML export file of your content. It will not include the theme and widgets as they cannot be exported. Export your content out of your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/ and import it into the install.
4. WordPress.com is the top level domain here and all blogs hosted by WordPress.com are on .wordpress.com sub-domains.
(a) Purchase a site redirect upgrade from wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/(b) Or if you have domain mapping then see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/#change-name-servers-to-point-the-domain-outside-of-wordpress-com and here http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/
5. Transfer subscribers. See http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/
6. Set your wordpress.com blog visibility to private. To change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
WordPress.com and WordPress.org have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

Thanks. I had suspected as much but given their name is WPEngine I had hoped they would be supported.
What I thought would be a simple process is turning into a bit of a nightmare.I am not sure if you can help me with this but, if I use a migration option from the new host will my wordpress.com remain intact?
I am worried of getting stuck half way through this complicated process and losing my blog.

When you create an XML export file of your content it’s a copy of the content. The original content stays exactly where it is.

WPEngine is to a certain point a competitor to WordPress.COM in that they both offer Managed Hosting – the fine print is different and WPEngine is a bit of a niche market, mostly high end sites where people want more support and flexibility than a standard host has – WPE has many features that standard hosts don’t have such as the “sandbox” where you can work on and test a new look and function to an existing web site – – i have met several people that really really like WPE

One last question.
I have a domain name – when I move it does the wordpress.com stay with the original wordpress.com domain name?
-
http://yarnandpointysticks.wordpress.com/ will stay http://yarnandpointysticks.wordpress.com/ unless you delete it (delete is a very bad option by the way DON’T DELETE THE OLD SITE!!!!!!) – you can set the site to private if you want – or put a last Post with news that you have moved –
your custom domain name will will point to your new site (make sure the permalinks match what you have here at your new site) – the domain forwarding would be a nice touch to help search engines that might have indexed the base http://yarnandpointysticks.wordpress.com/ to learn about your new URL
You can leave the registration here if you want or transfer it to another registrar

Thanks for your help so far and being so patient.
I have another question. Am I correct in thinking that it is not possible to access my PHP admin on a wordpress.com site?
The migration tool at WPEngine is telling me to download the PHP admin database and my WP content file.
The only thing I can find in WordPress.com that I can export is my xml file.
Am I misunderstanding something here?

Correct you can’t access your PHP Admin at WordPress.COM, nor do you have FTP access
Your only option here is to Export your content then Import it to WPE – that will move your content but not the Widgets etc.
