Guided transfer; how do I know if I have a premium theme or just a premium custom design plan?

  I’m considering a guided transfer of our WordPress.com blog to a self-hosted WordPress.org site and would like to know if our theme, Expound, is eligible for that. Is this considered a premium theme? We appear to have a premium ‘custom design’ plan that allows us to customize it with a different heading font, but that may be something different. At the very least, I think we would have to switch back to the default font for the transfer, but maybe we can’t do the transfer in the first place. Any advice on this? Thanks.

  Hey @kellyjhand, I’m pretty sure you can migrate your data from WordPress.com to a self-hosted installation but you will not be able to migrate the theme even if is a premium one. Once you will migrate the data, you will need to find a similar theme and install it on the self-hosted instance.

  Thanks for the reply, @dragoso. The info page for the theme, which I confirmed to be a “free” theme (even though we have a “premium” custom design plan) says this: “This theme is available for download to be used on your WordPress self-hosted installation.” Does that mean I can migrate the theme as well as the data?

  Hi Kelly, yep it looks the theme you’re using Expound is free and can’t be downloaded from here: https://wordpress.org/themes/expound/ – however Even if you;re using a free theme, I’m pretty sure you can migrate from WordPress.com including the theme.

  In this situation, you should go to your self-hosted WordPress instance, install the theme from https://wordpress.org/themes/expound/ and after that just import the XML file that you extract from your WordPress.com account.

  You’ll migrate the date and use the same theme on your self-hosted instance – makes sense?

  Thanks, @dragoso. I think this all makes sense, and I’m also hoping if we pay for WordPress’s Guided Transfer that they will be figuring a lot of this out for us.
