Guided Transfer – Premium Upgrade cancellation?
-
The system won’t let me purchase a Guided Transfer to wordpress.org because I purchased a $99 premium upgrade. I’m told I should transfer to wordpress.org because my current package does not allow FTP access (which I’m told I need to correct Moz-detected SEO errors now and in the future), nor the installation of Yoast SEO plug-ins and other widgets etc. Is it true I can only obtain these features by transferring to wordpress.org, or would the wordpress.com Enterprise package enable Yoast and FTP access, etc. If transfer is necessary, then is cancelling the premium upgrade the necessary solution, or is it just my custom fonts that are blocking the Guided Transfer purchase. Either way, will there be any adverse effects that cannot be correct via Guided Transfer? Thank you.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
It’s true that you cannot have plugins on WordPress.com for security reasons. The only place that you have activate plugins would be with self-hosted, WordPress.org.
Here’s more information about that:
Also, Guided Transfer is not currently available for blogs that use custom fonts. Please switch your custom fonts back to your theme’s default fonts before adding the Guided Transfer upgrade to your account.
You can read more about that here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/#frequently-asked-questions
As for any adverse effects, if you go with Guided Transfer, I don’t foresee any changes that would be irreversible. The customizations maybe different, but the Happiness Engineers at Guided Transfers would be able to happily walk you through the process.
Cheers!

Thanks Grace.
Are you saying that returning to default fonts will suffice, and that I don’t need to cancel the entire premium upgrade in order to activate the Guided Transfer?
-
Since you recently just purchased (less than 30 days) WordPress.com Premium, what I can do is provide you a partial refund of $81 so that get rids of all the upgrades besides the domain name because you won’t be needing this upgrade when you move to WordPress.org.
Please reply to confirm and I can take care of this for you!

Can you tell from examining my site what I should expect to see happen if I cancel the premium upgrade, besides the return to default fonts, and how long I will have to live with whatever “downgrades” will occur while the Guided Transfer process is being scheduled and implemented? I’m afraid to pull the proverbial trigger if you know what I mean.

Grace –
Can you help me with the coordination of the premium upgrade cancellation and guided transfer scheduling/implementation to make the transition as seemless as reasonably possible please?
Thought I had until March 15 to get a full refund on the premium cancellation but $81 works fine for me. $129 for the Guided Transfer?

You can preview what your site will look like with the default fonts (and colors) by going to Appearance > Customize > Fonts in your Dashboard. It’s only fonts and colors, so it shouldn’t make too big of a difference. Once you go to default fonts and colors, purchase Guided Transfer and a Happiness Engineer will contact you. It’s pretty seamless because the only thing that would change is the fonts and color, not actual content.
As for the pricing, yes you are correct. I’ll process the refund after you change the fonts.

Ok Grace I took the plunge. Returned to default fonts, purchased Guided Transfer, and signed up with BlueHost. Please process the premium upgrade refund.
Anything else I should know right now, or will a Happiness Engineer take it from here?
Thanks.
Patrick

Hi Patrick!
Sounds great! A Guided Transfer HE will contact you shortly. Please be patient! I have processed your refund. Please note that it may take up to a week for the refund to show up in your bank account.
Thank you!

Haha thank you! :) I’m glad it all worked out! Hope you have a blast at WordPress.org!
Have a wonderful weekend.

Hi Grace – Just got automated email about my “upgrade” (the one you cancelled for me) expiring tomorrow. Just double checking to make sure I don’t need this anymore now that I’m at wordpress.org hosted by BlueHost, correct?
-
Hi there,
After looking into your account, I found that there was no auto-renewal that was processed.
I do see that the Domain Mapping upgrade for doingjustice.com has auto-renewal still enabled. You can disable that by going to Store > My Upgrades in your Dashboard unless you plan on still using that for your WordPress.com site.
Please note that the domain: doingjusticenews.com is still registered through us (just hosting with BlueHost) so please note that must still be renewed with us every year in order for hosting to work! :) You can find out about the difference between registration and hosting here:
Cheers!

Now I’m thoroughly confused, and would REALLY like to speak with someone on the phone about this.
I wasn’t asking about domain name registration renewals. I was reacting to an email WordPress sent me about the expiration of upgrades that gave me customization abilities when I was with WordPress.com.
Before I transferred to WordPress.org, I had to disable those customizations, which you did for me by cancelling the upgrade.
Now I’m at wordpress.org using a customization tool to restore all the CSS, and I’m wondering if that’s in any jeopardy.
What do I have to do, if anything, and when do I have to do it, in order to make sure that the CSS customizations that have been added to my site do not disappear?

Hi there,
Sorry we only provide email support and I’m sure we can figure it out through this :).
Let me explain:
I wasn’t asking about domain name registration renewals. I was reacting to an email WordPress sent me about the expiration of upgrades that gave me customization abilities when I was with WordPress.com.
Yes, your custom design has expired and it will not be renewed. I didn’t mention this because this is unnecessary for when you move to WordPress.org. Please note canceling this upgrade in WordPress.com will not affect your .org site – they are completely 2 separate entities.
While the customizations on your WordPress.com site will no longer appear, this will not affect your WordPress.org site.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

I don’t believe I have a wordpress.com “site” with content, do I?
doesn’t doingjusticenews.com merely redirect to doingjustice.com, which now points to my wordpress.org site hosted on the nameservers of bluehost?
If so, there’s nothing at wordpress.com to customize or not customize, correct?
-
Please note that those are just domain names (doingjusticenews.com and doingjustice.com). Think of these as just the address of where all your content is at – not the actual content itself. So you can use these domains with any site you want on the internet essentially. After looking into the domains, I found that doingjustice.com is pointing to BlueHost (your WordPress.org site), but your domain: doingjusticenews.com is still pointing to your WordPress.com site. However, at WordPress.com you still have the domain mapping on doingjustice.com so you set doingjustice.com as your primary domain. This means that even if a reader goes to doingjusticenews.com they are redirected to your WordPress.org site (doingjustice.com).
So note, you purchased the domain doingjusticenews.com through us and this is set to expire on March 17th, 2015. However, the only reason it is currently pointing to your WordPress.org site is that you set your domain mapping for doingjustice.com as the primary domain. So even if readers go to doingjusticenews.com, they are automatically redirected to your primary which is doingjustice.com. This domain mapping is set to expire on April 25th, 2014. However, I see that the autorenewal is enabled. As long as you keep that enabled and the domain doingjusticenews.com renewed yearly with us, both sites will point to your WordPress.org site as seen here:
The domain with the “.wordpress.com” at the end of it comes along with every WordPress.com site. Yours is doingjusticenews.wordpress.com. So, all your content is still available at doingjusticenews.wordpress.com. However, readers cannot view this because you have all your domains, including doingjusticenews.wordpress.com, pointing to your WordPress.org site.
Please read the support guide below for more information on domains:
I know this can be a bit confusing so please let me know if you have any questions.
