Guided Transfer Questions
-
Hello!
I have my own domain name with wordpress.com – westbridgfordwire.com
Having had a great few months I’d like to pay for a move to .org. A guided transferI understand as follows;
I have to change to a free theme – then order the service – then I get contacted to arrange a date?
What I can’t find out is…do I need to be present on the arranged date? Or is it done in any case in my absence as it were…I have lots of images in posts/galleries – these are all saved and ok on the new .org installation?
If I buy a theme at my new recommended host do you transfer directly to it?
I worry about how long my free theme will run between ordering the happiness engineer and the change going ahead? This is because it will look different to my readers so it’d be good to know for how long…
Thank you
Pat

Hi Pat,
- Yes, you’re right. You do need to switch to a free theme to order Guided Transfer. Our agreement with theme developers doesn’t include migrating premium themes over. Once purchased, we’ll send you an e-mail asking for the credentials for your hosting account on one of the services at http://get.wp.com/hosting/ and let you know which day the transfer is scheduled for.
- You don’t need to be present for when the transfer occurs. We’ll give you a 24-hour window of when we’ll make the transfer.
- In your case, since your domain is registered somewhere else, you’ll need to change your nameservers to the new ones from your hosting provider once the transfer is made. That can take a few hours to be effective across the Internet.
- We’ll transfer everything over from your WordPress.com site and work to make it look as close to what is on your site as possible (using the free theme).
- The timing depends on two factors—how many other sites are in the “queue” for being transferred and how quickly we receive your hosting credentials once we’ve started processing the order. I would expect a couple of days if everything is moving quickly along. Once your order GT, you can switch back to your Premium theme until the day of the transfer and then transfer back to a free theme. We won’t proceed with the transfer if the premium theme is enabled, but in case there’s a few days wait until your scheduled date, you can somewhat avoid the visual disruption for your readers. The system makes you switch first to ensure you know that the theme can’t be transferred over.
- On WordPress.org-based sites, there isn’t one marketplace to buy themes (as there is on WordPress.com), so you can buy one from a number of places and use it on your site, or use any free one from http://themes.wordpress.com or from http://wordpress.org/themes. Your theme was made by WooThemes, so you can buy Headlines or another theme from theme at http://www.woothemes.com/ . Our team won’t install the theme, but it’s really simple to do on WordPress.org. Once your site is transferred and your nameservers have been updated, purchase and download the theme you’ll like, then go to your new site’s dashboard ( http://westbridgfordwire.com/wp-admin and visit the Appearance->Themes page. On WordPress.org, there is an option to Install Theme and you can choose the Upload option to upload your newly purchased theme).
Please let me know if you have any other questions or if there’s anything else we can do for you. Cheers!

Hi kraftbj
Firstly thank you for such a prompt response – I think I have all I need – now it’s timing, purging the site of old stuff to leave it as neat and tidy as I can.
One question – My domain is registered at GoDaddy I think…so the name servers there are directed to yourselves? Is it there that I change them to point at BlueHost, is that what you mean? And that’s after transfer?
Other than that I want to have a go in the next couple of weeks hopefully, will start working on theme choices etc and place order within that time…
Again many thanks for such great support – I think I now understand!

Hi Pat,
Correct—you’ll change them with GoDaddy once the transfer has been made. Feel free when you purchase it to ask for a specific timeframe, if you’ll like. After purchase, we’ll send you an e-mail letting you know when we have it on our schedule, but you can reply back to pick a different window. As long as there’s room on that day, we do our best to fit everyone in if there’s a particular scheduling issue.
Cheers!
