Guided transfer to non-preferred host

We are looking to transfer a WordPress.com blog to a self-hosted site. I am well familiar with WordPress, so I could easily do this myself, however, the site was using a premium theme (Forefront by Automattic) and there seemed to be no way to transfer the theme as well.

“Guided Transfer” to the rescue. A quick check (https://theme-support.wordpress.com/topic/transfer-from-wordpress-com-to-self-hosted-blog/) confirmed that we could indeed continue to use the theme on the self-hosted site. Great news!

We then purchased the Guided Transfer, only to realize that “preferred hosts” actually means “the only 2 supported hosts”. Although English is not my first language, I would like to argue the use of “preferred” here…

So my question is what can we do now? Is it possible for one of the “happyness engineers” to make an exception and transfer the self-hosted blog to another hoster (since we have already signed a hosting contract there)?
We have already pre-installed WordPress 4.0 and there’s a wp-config.php on the webspace with the necessary information, so the rest is more or less only exporting contents + the theme and importing them on the new webspace.

Alternatively, I really wouldn’t mind doing it myself, but we’d need the core files of the theme so we can migrate it together with the WordPress installation (also, I’d like to argue the price tag then).

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Andrea,

I do apologize for confusion here, as this is a really unique circumstance.

Because of specific tools we use in the Guided Transfer process we can only transfer your site to one of our preferred hosts. I’d be happy to refund the Guided Transfer purchase if you like, since you already have a hosting plan with another provider. This is just a technical constraint we can’t bend.

On the theme side, all of the Premium WordPress.com themes developed by Automattic are only available for self-hosted use via Creative Market:

    https://creativemarket.com/automattic/21385-Forefront

Normally as part of the guided transfer service we cover the cost due to Creative Market. However, I don’t have a way to refund or discount that transaction at Creative Market without it being part of the Guided Transfer.

I’ve brought this unique situation to the attention of our team in hopes we can make that coupon with Creative Market feasible at some point, but I don’t know when or if it would happen timely enough for your site’s transfer.

The guided transfer upgrade (€100) does cost less than the purchase of Forefront from Creative Market ($175). So in this odd case, I actually would recommend doing the Guided Transfer, which would give you access to all your files including the theme. You can could then export all that to your preferred hosting service and cancel the hosting account setup through BlueHost or HostGator used in the Guided Transfer.

I do apologize for the confusing nature to all this. Please let me know how you wish to proceed and I’ll do my best to help ease the process.

    Best,

    -Alex G.

    Hi Andrea,

Worked with a few people today about this and I believe I have another workaround lined up that will be simpler for everyone. :)

In a moment I’ll be sending you a message to the email associated with your account. We’ll work this out there.

    Best,

    -Alex G.

Thank you Alex, the solution you suggested would work great for us. My webmaster Oliver should already have gotten back to you. :)
