Gutenberg Blocks not showing in edit page

    I’ve recently taken over a site from the previous author and I’m running into a weird issue. When editing a page, Gutenberg blocks are not displaying.

    In the screenshot below you can see the page in edit mode. It contains a handful of Cover blocks. Within the block you can see the background image and a generic paragraph block with no content.

    However, as seen in the screenshot below, when you view the page, you can see the blocks rendering with content.

    why could be causing this? I’m trying to update the content of this page but can’t actual find the content in edit mode.

    I’ve tried changing the theme, including Twenty Twenty and it still behaves the same.

    Hi there,

    This is very weird. I checked you homepage in the editor, and the content isn’t there at all, not even in the HTML view. And when inspecting the page’s source code in my browser, it has a <gutenblock> HTML tag that I’ve never encountered before.

    For me that points to the content being inserted dynamically by a page builder plugin somehow, but if that were the case I’d at least have expected some shortcodes on the page. I also don’t see any plugins installed on your site that fits that class of plugin, so I’m stumped.

    Are you able to contact the previous person responsible for the site? I suspect that will be the quickest way to get to the bottom of how exactly they set it up.

    Otherwise, please contact live chat support at https://wordpress.com/help/contact – to figure this out we might need to try some stuff like disabling plugins to see if that changes anything, and it would be better to do that with you in real time.

    Thanks for the reply. Glad to hear I’m not crazy and this is, in fact, bizarre. I’ve reached out to the previous author and they didn’t understand much of what I was saying so I don’t think I’ll get any where pursuing that further. I’ll reach out to live support.

    The problem has been resolved as best it can be. I ran the site in troubleshooting mode and found all the blocks on the homepage had “invalid content” errors.

    While I wasn’t able to determine what the invalid content was or how to fix it, I was able to resolve the blocks and can now edit the content in editor mode in site mode.
