Gutenberg Killed the WordPress Blog

Wordpress, I may be seeking other options for my site. I don’t want to because I’ve loved using Worpress for the past four and a half years, but here’s why your days as my host may be numbered:

    1. I hate the new block editor. I told you this when you first allowed us to test it (https://twitter.com/TakingUpRoom/status/1087450655768293376?s=20). It’s clunky, it doesn’t allow you to change the alignment of a photo, and it’s extremely inefficient. There’s constant scrolling all over the screen to perform tasks that used to take thirty seconds or less.
    2. You can’t go back and edit blocks after you move on.
    3. As I writer, I don’t write in blocks. I write documents as a whole. Block editing only works on sites that are light on text and heavy on graphics. WordPress is no longer designed for writers.
    4. I don’t appreciate the condscending attitude of some of your forum posters. “That’s not how technology works,” isn’t an acceptable answer to “Why are you changing something that works?” In other words, progress means turning a clean, straightforward system into a crappy, confusing one.
    5. I also don’t appreciate the assumptions on the a part of your development team. The criticisms WP users have been throwing your way for the past two years have obviously fallen on deaf ears. Don’t forget, people vote with their feet. Even virtual ones.
    6. I understand that the Classic Editor and Classic Block are going to be options. The problem is that Classic Editor seems to only allow editing from the Dashboard as opposed to the Site Manager. This is stupid. We might as well be writing posts on Notepad.

Now, I will give you a chance once the new Editor drops, but you’re on probation. If maintaining my blog becomes more of a pain than a pleasure, I assure you I will be moving my content to another host. Thank you for your time.

  • Hi there!

A lot has changed since we first introduced the Block Editor into WordPress.com. Have you had a look at the guide we prepared to get the best out of the new editor?
Let me also try to reply to some of the points you brought up:

it doesn’t allow you to change the alignment of a photo

You can change the alignment of an image, in fact there are more alignment options than in the Classic Editor. You can also control its size:

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/image-block/

There’s constant scrolling all over the screen to perform tasks that used to take thirty seconds or less.

You do not need to scroll up or down, to add a new block you would just click the + button below the recently added content.

You can’t go back and edit blocks after you move on

I’m not sure why would you say that, you can edit the blocks at any moment, even after you have already published the post/page. If you click on the block in question, you will be able to edit its content as well as the settings.

As I writer, I don’t write in blocks. I write documents as a whole.

The block that is added by default is Paragraph Block. You can just keep writing without the need to add any new block. As soon as you click Enter, a new Paragraph Block will be automatically created below.
You can also add Classic Block, if you prefer, it will give you the same experience as the Classic Editor:

I don’t appreciate the condscending attitude of some of your forum posters. “That’s not how technology works,” isn’t an acceptable answer to “Why are you changing something that works?” In other words, progress means turning a clean, straightforward system into a crappy, confusing one.

I believe you are referring to my reply to another post. I’m sorry if you have found that phrase condescending, I may not have expressed myself well.
Web technology is constantly evolving and we need to adapt to it to give our users the best experience when creating their site.
I know that it may be very frustrating when a tool you have learned to use well suddenly changes, that is why we have incorporated the Classic Block into the editor so you can keep using the same tool but with more options.

If you need any help with the Block Editor or with switching to the Classic one, we will be happy to assist you.
