Gutenberg – Limit Roles?

  • Unknown's avatar

Our community of writers is just getting started with the Classic Editor so for the time being we want to activate Gutenberg but limit permissions to use it to specific users. We tried defining a role that only has access to Classic; changing permissions, etc., with Gutenberg Settings, etc. No combination that we tried made Gutenberg active for a subset of users. In some cases, Admins could not use Gutenberg even tho it had been activated. We are using the twenty-twelve theme.

To summarize: we want to have one set of Writers who only have access to Classic and another (more advanced group) have access to both Classic and the Gutenberg Block Editor. And, yes, we anticipate that support may be dropped for Classic.

    What’s the “secret?”

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Roger,

As far as I know, it’s not possible, mainly because the activation of each of the editors is a site wide activation.

The most that’s possible here is to encourage a set of writers to use a classic block with their content: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/

    I hope this helps.
