Gutenberg question re images

  • Unknown's avatar

Just checked out the Gutenberg editor with my theme (Rowling) – learned this: resizing an image with a caption separated the image from its caption, both in preview and in published form.

Little images are kind of glitchy in this theme anyway, I’ve found. But still.

    Advice?

  • Hi there,

Your theme should have no effect on this. Rather, this sounds like an issue with the editor.

Did you add the image using an image block, or did you add the image inside a classic block? And how exactly did you resize it?

Can you check if changing the alignment settings of the image after you resize it has any effect?

    Used an image block.

Used the “handles” on the sides of the image inside the box to do the resizing.

I had already changed the alignment to “centered”.

I was aiming for something approximately “thumbnail”. I would have been pretty happy if I’d had a checkbox for that.

btw, just found out that I probably should be using a different help channel. But … you never know, this might be helpful to others.

I was practicing, so I’ve iced that post now, but will check on the order effect when I get a chance.

fyi, I agree about the editor, but I have noticed that Rowling has some problems with image positioning and captioning – I’ve assumed it has something to do with its being “responsive” and have just learned how to deal with it by trial and error.

[y’all are about to make my hard-won knowledge obsolete, i guess. Just sayin’ Change or die. lol]

  • Feel free to report any bugs you see with the theme — we’ll get them fixed if we can.

It looks like this issue with resizing images in the bock editor was opened here:
    https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/11719

Is that what you’re seeing too? If so we can add a link to this thread, or you can if you’d like to follow developments.

Yes, this looks like what I was seeing.

However, after a couple days offline for life events, came back and did a few tests on my private blog, and things seem to be working OK there – I tried everything I could think of after just one cup of coffee, and captions seemed to stay aligned with the images. So perhaps this has been fixed.

BTW, it looks to me like some options have been added to the image editing panel – or maybe I had just missed them before. [choosing size of image, and image link options] In either event, they are really nice!!

  • The editor is still a work in progress, with new versions being released every few days, so it’s possible the issues you were seeing were patched shortly after you reported it here.

I’m marking this as resolved for now, but please do let us know if this, or any other issues with the block editor, crops up again.
