hacked link on my wordpress.com blog

  • Unknown's avatar

I post on a private blog hosted by WordPress.com.

One of my “enemies” hacked the link to my public BlogSpot blog, redirecting it to some religious blog. In fact, if point my browser from anywhere within WordPress.com to my BlogSpot blog, it goes instead to this religious site.

I wrote to WordPressSupport but they are on vacation until September 19. Is there anything I can do to fix this by myself?

Nothing here gets hacked. Really, nothing has.

Please describe the actual problem in detail.

    Hi, Mark.

I threatened the hacker with legal action and apparently he took my threat seriously. Previously I couldn’t reach the address http://www.carlfutia.blogspot.com from either my WordPress.com blog or from the WordPress.com home page by pointing my browser to http://www.carlfutia.com. If I did this I would be redirected to a religious site http://www.azt.com.

However, I can now reach http://www.carlfutia.blgospot.com via the address bar both from my WP.com blog and from the WP.com home page.

However, the link on my blog remains hacked and I cannot fix it, even by deleting the link widget and deleting the link too and recreating it.

You really need to see this for yourself. My blog is private. Send me your wordpress username. I will add you to my reader list and you can see for yourself.

I know that you think your site is 100% secure, but my personal experience over the past few days is that it is not. Sorry to be a heretic. I should add that I have a lot of experience in the computer word dating back to my Fortran and IBM 360 days. I know a hack when I see one!

This is a long shot, but are you sure he didn’t do some kind of javascript redirect on your blogspot blog?

Also, your URL at Blogspot is just http://carlfutia.blogspot.com/ . There should be no www in it. Try that.

Thanks for the suggestion, raincoaster. How would I find the hack on my blogspot blog?

In any case, it would have to be a pretty specific redirect, only for traffic coming from my WP blog, not from the WP home page and not from the address bar itself. ONLY the link on my blog generates a redirect to this religious site. If I use the address bar instead I go to my blogspot blog, no problems there.

I can’t recreate the problem. It sounds like a possible browser glitch or caching problem to me. I really can’t tell without being able to reproduce the problem though.

Can you highlight the line ABOVE that link, all the way to the line below it, then View Source and post the code here, between backticks?

    Happiness:

It is not a browser glitch. I have the same problem with both Firefox and Safari. I deleted all cookies on both, same result. I NEVER use InternetExplorer, but I just opened it up and went to my WP.com blog. SAME result!

Did you actually view the homepage of my blog and click on the link “Free Blogspot Blog Carl Futia”?.

I just opened up IE on a friend’s computer. The same redirect to azt.com occurs when I click on my blogs link from his computer too!

I think WP has a serious problem.

Can we try to resolve this? Go to my WP.com blog’s home page and click on the link. What happens?

The WordPress.com blog linked to your username has been deleted, so no. And you mentioned that this was posted in a private blog, so unless we are members of that blog we can’t see it.

The easiest way is what raincoaster suggested, copy the code and paste it here in between backticks.

    Folks:

The link to the private blog is http://carlfutiarealtime.wordpress.com.
Send me your WP username (email visible only to moderators and staff) and I’ll let you in.

I cannot highlight, right click and copy the code. This is a WordPress.com supported blog. I have no access to the code as far as I can tell. I tried to highlight and copy as you suggested but no dice.

I appreciate your efforts, but I don’t think we can make more progress until an expert actually goes to my blog and clicks on the link him or herself to see this is not my imagination! So send my your username at (email visible only to moderators and staff) and I’ll put you on my readers list.

    Thanks

Well, you can just SEE our usernames!

I really don’t know why you’d have trouble seeing the code. View Source is a fundamental, one-click function on Firefox.

Thanks for the hint. here is the code:

    <li id=”linkcat-1356″ class=”widget-container snap_preview widget_links”><h3 class=”widget-title”>Blogroll</h3>
    <ul class=”snap_preview xoxo blogroll”>
