Hi there, It’s possibly related to an issue reported by a number of other free WordPress.com site owners follow a change to the advertising on WordPress.com free sites.
Have a look at these threads and if it is the same on your site, please take and share a screenshot. https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

If your issue is the same as in the other forum threads I linked to, then this is a problem that only WordPress.com can correct from their side.
Thing is, it doesn’t seem to affect everyone, also making it harder to track down, otherwise these forums and support would be flooded with thousands of complaints.
For the meantime, I’m thinking that I’m going to stick up a notice on my free site explaining the issue to my visitors.
