Ham is being blocked

My akismet stats say that it has blocked 5 hams. I thought that these represented actual comments, not spam. Is there anyway to retrieve them? I have my comment settings set for moderation approval.
    Thank you

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • As I understand it, the “Ham” number at the Akismet stats refers to legitimate comments that were not blocked. Legitimate comments that are blocked are referred to as false positives. Those will only appear if you marked anything in your spam queue as Not Spam. You can check for false positives by going to Comments in your dashboard and clicking on the “Spam” link at the top.

  • In other words, when the Akismet stats refer to spam and ham, it’s referring to spam comments as compared to legitimate comments. It’s purely for you to see the comparison. If, for example, you clicked on the tab marked ‘Yummy Pie’, you’ll see your spam and ham as a percentage of total comments.

Okay..to clarify, this is a new blog, only about four weeks old. The ONLY comment that has ever shown for me to moderate was a test one I did this morning after logging out. So somewhere I have five comments taht I never got to see?

  • I’d suggest you check the spam folder on the comments page in the dashboard. There is no other place we can see comments that were caught by the spam filter. If you see a legitimate comment there you can un-spam it.

However, I also don’t think the Akismet stats are perfectly accurate, so don’t worry too much about that.

Well any damage is already done. I originally had it set to destroy the spam without my input. Obviously a big mistake on my part as my spam folder is empty. I now have it set to hold spam in the folder for my input on approval or trash.

We have no controls at all on the built in Akismet spam filter on our blogs. The worst of all spam is not ever sent to use to examine because it contains malware that would bring down many sites if opened. Ham is a a number count of the times we have marked a comment as not spam ie. as a false positive. There is no such thing as eliminating all spam but Akismet works very well. For more information please take the time to read “5 things every blogger should know about spam” on this page Akismet: How it works http://akismet.com/how/

  • In my experience false positives are actually very rare. And Akismet is a learning engine, so if you mark something as Not Spam it will learn not to filter it again in future. Just make very sure something really isn’t spam before you approve it – not all spam are computer-generated. Some is created by real people and seem genuine at first glance, but if you look at their emails and website URLs you can quickly spot the fakes. The link timethief provided will give you more info on that.

How can I have a Ham count of five if I have never marked a comment as not spam? I’m not trying to be difficult but I am frustrated that the site is telling me something occurred five times that I have never seen nor marked.

The only comment ever sent to me for approval was the test one I made this morning. I did not approve but I also did not mark it as spam. My total comment number sits at zero

Quick update, after the good folks at Akismet spent some time watching my Akismet stat page they told me that my rising ham count also included my own comments and the number of posts made.
Thanks to everyone who answered on this thread.
