Happiness Engineers?

I have pre-sale questions. Where are the people that I need to speak with?

    Hello @seasidesquirrel!

I’ve added a modlook tag to this post to catch the staff’s attention. In the meantime, myself or other volunteers may be able to help so feel free to post your question! :)

This is all new to me so forgive my ignorance. My goal is to set up a WooCommerce store to sell products however; the disconnect/connection between WordPress and WooCommerce makes this awfully confusing. With that said, I am unsure if a WordPress Plan (https://wordpress.com/pricing/) is a the proper hosting solution for a WooCommerce store or not. Please help.

No problem! I’ll do what I can to help. We all start somewhere :)

To use the store feature here on WordPress.com you would need a Business plan or higher. You can upgrade your plan at any time so feel free to start with a free plan and play around with the basic features to see if you enjoy the process before you pay for it!

This doc has a lot of great information about getting started on WordPress.com: https://en.support.wordpress.com/start/

And here’s a nice intro to the Store feature: https://en.support.wordpress.com/store/

And if you have questions along the way, feel free to hop back into the forums! Volunteers like myself are always here to help, along with several amazing Moderators and Happiness Engineers. :)

    neverbenn,

Thank you for the valuable information! Do you know if it is possible to use HTML in the long product descriptions or is WooCommerce set to only use text? If text, can this be overridden? I couldn’t find an answer in the support site.

Hello! I’m not certain as I don’t have a Business Plan to test on, but from the screenshots I can see in the Products documentation it appears the Store feature here on WordPress.com is a simplified version of the full WooCommerce plugin – which makes sense since simplicity is the name of the game here! Looks like you can add links and change text styles but I don’t see a code editor. (Though I may be wrong… Wish I could test this!)

What sort of code were you hoping to add in the description?

If you need more customization or want finer control over the details and code on your site, you may want to look into a self-hosted WordPress install instead. There’s a nice overview of the differences here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

A self-hosted site would exist on a server from a host of your choice (rather than hosted here on WordPress.com), and is completely open source (free!) except for your hosting and domain fees – meaning both WordPress and the WooCommerce plugin are free to use, and you would have full control over all of your themes and settings.

If you are familiar with local development environments (using your computer as a server of sorts, for your eyes only) you could download the WordPress package here: https://wordpress.org/download/ and play around with it to see how it varies from WordPress.com.

Phew! That’s a lot of information to process in one go, but hopefully it helps provide some options and gives you a couple of avenues to explore! Let me know if you’ve got more questions! :)

Hello and thank you for the information you have shared. I will consider downloading and testing the software as you have suggested.

Sounds good! If you do decide to go with the self-hosted option, the WordPress.org forums would be the best place to get help, and WooCommerce has its own support center as well.

    Best of luck!!
