Hard returns aren’t showing up on my posts!

This is strange. Today, when I type a post and press “return,” I don’t get a new paragraph to show up on my post. I looks fine when I’m typing, but my post is messed up. So when I type this:

    Test

    Test

    Test

    The following shows up:

    TestTestTest

    Can anyone help? Thanks!

What are you using for writing your posts? I see a whole bunch of apple-specific coding in that first post with a lot of open beginning and ending tags.

My suggestion is to open the post for edit in the wordpress editor, select all the text in the post, and then go to the “clean up messy code” icon on the extended tool bar and click on it to see if it will straighten things up.

If you are using the Mac textedit program in Rich Text Mode, or using the Apple wordprocessor, Pages” I would suggest that you use the “paste as plain text button on the extended tool bar when pasting things in so that it strips out all the messy code. You will have to add italic and bold and such after doing so.

Yes, I was on my Mac. I’m not using a text edit program- just the regular wordpress web based stuff.

I just found another thread about this same issue with Safari.

What I don’t understand is why I didn’t have this trouble this weekend when I set up the blog, using the same computer.

Also, who do we complain to about this. Safari is extremely common and the fact that WP doesn’t support it is disappointing.

The TinyMCE editor used by WordPress was not, until just recently compatible with Safari. After a lot of research, I’m of the mind to blame both TinyMCE and WordPress for the problem since the older version of TinyMCE works mostly fine with Safari on my test pages I set up.

The good news is that WordPress is going with the new version of TinyMCE in the next big update, but no one knows exactly when that update will be nor how well they will do at integrating it into WordPress. I would expect the update probably in the next 30-45 days, but that is purely speculation. (It looks like there may be another delay in the release of the new version of WordPress.)

For now, download Firefox and use it. Once the new editor hits here you can delete Firefox and go back to Safari (after testing it of course). http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Thanks for your help, thesacredpath. For now, shift+return seems to work. This is surely a stupid question, but how will I find out when they release the update?

The admin area will likely change dramatically from what it is now and there will be a rash of problems as they roll it out and onto all the different servers.

The shift+return solution will likely be erratic and you could reach a point where it will no longer work for you.
