Harmonic – how to hide pages from front page and activate background scalability
-
Hi,
I’ve read all the support docs I can find on Harmonic* but I’m still having trouble.
* I’ve read this one 5 times. Still no help:
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/harmonic/support/My issues are:
1. The image I set as my main background image on my front page won’t scale with the browser size. I have the image set to 2400 x 1400 but when I enlarge the browser window, it still goes beyond the edges and looks kind of dumb. I’ve tried this in Chrome and Safari. And actually, though I did have the image customized using the “Header Image” and also set it up using the “Static Front Page” tool, it’s currently not appearing at all!2. Secondly, I don’t want the pages or the content of the pages to appear over the main image on the front page. I don’t want them to appear at all on the front page. I only want POSTS to appear on the front page, though not over the main “header” image.
3. Currently all the posts that I had have now disappeared and been replaced by the page headers and their content. (Those posts were made when I was using a different theme. I added the new pages after switching to Harmonic. They appeared at first but then went away after I created the new pages.)
4. Although I added a logo, I don’t see it or the tagline.
Any help would be greater appreciated!
Thanks. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

1. The image I set as my main background image on my front page won’t scale with the browser size. I have the image set to 2400 x 1400 but when I enlarge the browser window…
Are you referring to the site https://creativearson.wordpress.com? If so, presently you’ve got the “About” page set as the front page (homepage), and you evidently have a white background color, rather than a background image, set.
2. Secondly, I don’t want the pages or the content of the pages to appear over the main image on the front page. I don’t want them to appear at all on the front page. I only want POSTS to appear on the front page, though not over the main “header” image.
It’s not clear what you mean by “appear over the main image on the front…” I find no “main “header” image” on your front page or elsewhere. See response to #1 above.
3. Currently all the posts that I had have now disappeared and been replaced by the page headers and their content. (Those posts were made when I was using a different theme. I added the new pages after switching to Harmonic. They appeared at first but then went away after I created the new pages.)
You’re posts have not disappeared. When you set a static front page at Settings > Reading — your “About” page, is presently so set — you need to set another static page to display your posts. Normally one would also provide a link to the posts page in a custom menu. Harmonic has an unusual front page option with five sections, one of which displays recent posts, but you are not presently using the Front Page Template on your front page. A bit confusingly, the link to the relevant guide Setting Up Your Front Page appears in the Harmonic theme guide, though it resides hidden in the Harmonic demo.
Here are your post archives pages for the years 2013-2015:2015 — https://creativearson.wordpress.com/2015/
2014 — https://creativearson.wordpress.com/2014/
2013 — https://creativearson.wordpress.com/2013/4. Although I added a logo, I don’t see it or the tagline.
On the Harmonic theme, the site logo displays as an overlay on the Title section of the front page template. The tagline doesn’t display on some themes, including Harmonic.

I guess that you refer to this image: https://creativearson.files.wordpress.com/2015/05/cropped-arcatabeach-homepage.jpg, as your main “header” image. If so, the file size of that image 1240 X 780. Where have you set it to display at 2400 X 1400?

Thanks so much for replying.
I’d accidentally resized the background image but now have it set to 2400×1400, which was the original.Anyway, the problem with that is, I don’t want it to be the background image on all the pages, just on the front page. However, when I use that image as the header, it appears cropped. It appears as a header. What I’m going for is what Harmonic shows in their demowhere there’s one image on the whole front page. Even when I try an image sized to 2400×2400, the header image stays at the top half of the screen. And a background image appears on the other pages. I want the other pages to have plain white backgrounds.
— you need to set another static page to display your posts. Normally one would also provide a link to the posts page in a custom menu.
So, how do I create a new page—perhaps called Blog—and then insert the old posts?
Thanks again. I really appreciate it.

What’s more bizarre is how the “background” image will appear everywhere EXCEPT the front page. If I don’t have a header selected. The front page chooses random stock images I’ve never seen before.
-
Actually, even if I do have a header selected, it doesn’t appear now. I just get stock photos. And although I created a BLOG page and set it to show my posts, they still appear over the front page which I don’t want them to do.

What I’m going for is what Harmonic shows in their demo where there’s one image on the whole front page.
The Harmonic demo doesn’t have one background image for the whole front page; it has four, one each for four separate sections.
You may hide the sections you don’t wish to display at Customize > Theme > Visibility.
Each section of the Front Page Template can have it’s own background set at Customize > Theme > Front Page Template sections 1-5. However, these backgrounds have nothing to do with the background set for the site at Customize > Colors & Background, or at dashboard amin panel > Appearance > Background.
So, how do I create a new page—perhaps called Blog—and then insert the old posts?
1. Go to dashboard admin panel > Pages > Add New. Add a title to the title field and publish it. It needn’t have any content because the content won’t be visible.
2. “insert the old posts” — You don’t need to insert the old posts. At Settings > Reading when you assign at static page as your front page, you’re also asked to assign a page as your “posts page.” Assign the new page, titled “Blog,” “Posts,” or what have you, as the posts page there. -
You may hide the sections you don’t wish to display at Customize > Theme > Visibility.
In the previous post, I meant to put this sentence in bold, not as a quote. -
I have all the sections hidden in visibility. So now the posts are hidden from the front page. (Finally!)
However, under Customize > Theme… There is no “Front Page Template sections 1-5”
All that appears there are 3 categories: Portfolio, Visibility, WidgetsI don’t see a place to set which pages get the background and which do not.
-
There are five sections in a Harmonic page assigned to the Front Page Template. At the “The Sections Explained” section of the “Setting Up Your Front Page” page, the sections are explained:
1. Title: Displays your site’s title and tagline. If you opt for a Site Logo, it will be displayed instead of the site title.
2. News: Displays your latest posts.
3. Page: Displays the page title and content from the Front Page Template.
4. Widgets: A special widget area only displayed on the front page.
5. Portfolio Front: If you have a portfolio, your most recent projects are displayed here. You said,
I have all the sections hidden in visibility. So now the posts are hidden from the front page. (Finally!)
Are you sure you want to hide all five sections? Hiding all five sections results in all five backgrounds hidden. I thought you wanted a background displayed on the front page that doesn’t display elsewhere. You said,
Anyway, the problem with that is, I don’t want it to be the background image on all the pages, just on the front page. However, when I use that image as the header, it appears cropped.
Leaving one of them unhidden might solve your issue, though it’s not clear which one you’d prefer.
However, under Customize > Theme… There is no “Front Page Template sections 1-5”
All that appears there are 3 categories: Portfolio, Visibility, WidgetsAt Customize > Theme you should see the following seven tabs, not just the three you mention. The first two are “Portfolio,” and “Visibility.” We can ignore those for now, because it is the next five tabs correspond to the five sections of the Front Page Template. “Front Page Template sections 1-5” is just my shorthand for the five sections. I don’t know why WordPress doesn’t make it more clear that five and only five of the seven tabs correspond to sections of any page with the Front Page Template assigned (not just a front page). The five relevant tabs are:
Title
News
Page
Widgets
Portfolio front
Click on any one of these to display the customization options. Each of them allows the addition of a background image and other options. Selecting (from files or your media library) a background image here for any of the five sections replaces the corresponding default background image. What’s more bizarre is how the “background” image will appear everywhere EXCEPT the front page…The front page chooses random stock images I’ve never seen before.
It’s not bizarre. This theme has five default background images for the five sections of the Front Page Template. If you don’t have a page assigned to the Front Page Template you won’t see any of those default background images. Also, note that you may replace any of the default background images, as described above.

I forgot to provide a link to the “Setting Up Your Front Page” page in the first paragraph of the preceding post. I had provided this link in an earlier post here.
-
What’s more bizarre is how the “background” image will appear everywhere EXCEPT the front page…The front page chooses random stock images I’ve never seen before.
I’d forgotten that I thought this was bizarre when I first encountered it a few months ago. Even started a thread to complain about these mysterious images which I’d never uploaded, and which don’t appear in the media library. To remove them you have to replace them, or hide them, or just evade them by not using a Front Page Template, because the image files can’t be located.
-
Everything you write would make sense if those tabs were available to me. However, because those four tabs (Title, News, Page, Portfolio Front) do not appear under Customize > Theme, my only conclusion is that perhaps this has to do with the fact that I changed an existing blog to Harmonic from another WordPress theme. Perhaps when I moved my blog into Harmonic, it just left those tabs out for some reason. Which leaves me a little stranded, still trying to make sense of how to control the background on each individual page.
Maybe I need to pay to upgrade to premium? I’d rather not do that unless I know it’s going to solve the issue.
I’d read “Setting Up Your Front Page” a couple times before coming here. I only started the thread because the instructions didn’t correspond to what I was seeing.
Also, I currently have visibility turned off on all five sections except Title Section. These have no effect on the main background issue, however.
(By the way, I love your music page! I’m a big jazz fan, including the early stuff. Not as knowledgeable as you about the era but I’m book parking the site so I can continue to explore.)

Also, I currently have visibility turned off on all five sections except Title Section. These have no effect on the main background issue, however.
As I mentioned above, you should be able to apply a background to each of the five sections, including the Title section at Customize > Theme. If Title is the only section unhidden at Visibility, then only that background will display on the front page. If, as you indicate, the Title section doesn’t appear then you won’t be able to apply a background to it. But it looks like you have applied a background to it, and a site logo, and a tagline — I’d forgotten that my tagline was hidden on the Title section.
By the way, I love your music page! I’m a big jazz fan, including the early stuff.
Thanks. I’m glad you’ve been enjoying my site.

Got it working!
I think what’s been most difficult is understanding the difference between the background setting under Colors & Backgrounds and the image set as title image in a phantom page. (First section in the “Setting Up Your Front Page” document. At least that’s how I’m understanding things right now. Thanks so much for your help! I’m in your debt.

Got it working!
Excellent. You picked one of the more complicated themes, so the difficulty encountered is understandable. : )
