Harmonic Portfolio How to See More than 5 Projects

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

    I’ve looked at the other forums and tried to see if I can fix the problem I’m having with the harmonic theme… but I’m having trouble.

    I can only see 5 projects per page for my portfolio but I would like to increase that. I;ve been to Site Settings > Writing > Portfolio Projects but I don’t see anyway to increase this number. I’m not sure how to do this

    Hi Rachel,

    I can only see 5 projects per page for my portfolio but I would like to increase that. I;ve been to Site Settings > Writing > Portfolio Projects but I don’t see anyway to increase this number.

    It’s odd that this hasn’t been addressed by WordPress.com yet, but you can’t set the number of projects to display at the Calypso Writing Settings page, https://wordpress.com/settings/writing. As far as I know, the only place that number can be set is at the WP Admin Writing Settings page. Specifically, the setting is at WP Admin Writing Settings > Your Custom Content Types > Portfolio Projects > Portfolio pages display at most __ projects. I’ve not found any limit to the number that may be chosen here. Your WP Admin Writing Settings page would be https://rachelantoniadesigns.com/wp-admin/options-writing.php.

    Regardless of the setting at “Portfolio pages display at most,” in tests I’ve not been able to display more than eight projects in the Portfolio front section of the front page template. Eight seems to be the limit. It displays the most recent eight. You should be able to display all of your projects on the portfolio page, https://rachelantoniadesigns.com/portfolio, which presently displays 10 projects.

    with the Harmonic theme activated, that is.

    I took a quick look at Harmonic’s code, and I can confirm that – the home page section will show up to 8 projects, and then actual portolio pages will display more, based on the setting @musicdoc1 describes above :)

    So, I was able to go into the settings and change my portfolio to show more than 5 per page (right now it’s set at 16) however, it was never set to 5 in the first place, it was set to 10. Odd.

    Now, I’m experiencing a different problem where the last images on the page aren’t in alignment with the others except for the first 4 projects.

    I’ve tried switching the number of projects from 16 to 8 to 24 but it doesn’t seem to change this.

    @rachelantoniadesigns,

    I don’t know why it previously displayed only five. I believe there were eight projects in your front page template portfolio section when I visited on the 16th. In my tests, eight is the limit of projects that I’ve been able to display in this section. Therefore, I don’t know how you’ve been able to display sixteen projects there presently. Have you used CSS customization to increase the limit?

    Now, I’m experiencing a different problem where the last images on the page aren’t in alignment with the others except for the first 4 projects.

    I don’t see the effect you describe. On my desktop monitor (1280 x 1024 screen resolution), with the browser window displayed normally, I see four rows of four projects. If I narrow the browser window I can get it to display five rows of three plus a single row of one, or a single column of sixteen.

    staff-loquaciousloon might be able to explain the effects you describe, but he’s likely away until Monday. You may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of the topic to call for staff attention if you would like to try to have it addressed sooner.

  • Hi @rachelantoniadesigns!

    Like @musicdoc1, I was also surprised to see the 16 portfolio items on your page so I dug back into Harmonic’s code this morning. I see where I was misreading it last week and it will, as you discovered, use the number you have set in the WP Admin section of your site. Good find, and thank you for sharing it!

    For other searchers, if you visit your site and add /wp-admin to the end of your address, you can access the WP Admin dashboard for your site.

    On this screen, you can use the Settings > Reading page to set the number of portfolio projects that are displayed :)

    Regarding the image alignment, I see the same thing that @musicdoc1 describes – four rows of four, except on smaller screen sizes.

    Can you describe a little more of what you are seeing, and what browser you’re using?

    You can also take a Screenshot and post a link to it so we can see what’s happening :)

    staff-loquaciousloon,

    I was also surprised to see the 16 portfolio items on your page so I dug back into Harmonic’s code this morning. I see where I was misreading it last week and it will, as you discovered, use the number you have set in the WP Admin section of your site.

    The first time I tested this, on January 16th, I had 9 published projects, and the WP Admin Writing Settings “Portfolio pages display at most” setting at 10 projects. Yet only 8 displayed on the “Portfolio front” section of the Front Page Template. All 9 projects displayed on the Portfolio page.

    On the 21st, in rechecked this result, and after increasing the number of published projects to 10, still found that only 8 of the 10 published projects displayed in the “Portfolio front” section of the front page.

    Today, after reading your post above, I again found that only 8 of the 10 published projects displayed. This time I decided to see if increasing the “Portfolio pages display at most” setting at Writing Settings might have an effect. After changing that value to 16, all 10 published projects displayed in the “Portfolio front” section. What’s more, when I returned the value to 10, all 10 still displayed now, though they hadn’t at that value in several previous tests.

    I don’t know how to explain the inconsistencies in these (my test) results. Might be a browser issue privacy settings issue.

  • Very interesting – and good to note you’ve seen that in case it comes up again on future threads!

    @musicdoc1

    See this is the hard part. I only want 8 on the front page. 8 was perfect. However, I did want more to show in the actual portfolio section. Now I’ve got it fixed in my portfolio section but my front page is now 16 instead of 8.

    I’m not really sure how to change anything, especially seeing that my portfolio was set to originally only show 10 pictures in the beginning.

    What I would like is to display 8 pieces on the homepage and 16 in the portfolio page if anyone has any advice on doing that.

    Thank you all for your help and responding so quickly. I know there’s a way I’m just not sure what to do.

    I added a screenshot of what I’m seeing. It’s so strange sometimes the alignment is off in one place then at time it’s off somewhere else. I’ve checked at my work computer as well and it does the same thing on a different browser (chrome vs internet explorer)

    Screenshot Below

    @rachelantoniadesigns,

    Reducing the number only on the front page might be possible, but I suspect it would require custom CSS, which I’m unfamiliar with. I’d suggest you wait for chad1008 to address the topic again. He’ll provide a definitive response to your latest request.

    Alternatively, you may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar here to call for staff attention, which might shorten the wait.

    That is odd – I’m not able to reproduce the aligment you’ve shown in chrome in IE (testing multiple versions).

    Can you double check that the browsers on both comuters are up to date? http://browsehappy.com

    It’s like you read my mind @musicdoc1!

    With a Premium Plan or Business Plan, you’d be able to use Custom CSS to hide the extra items on the home page.

    The following snippet, if added under My Site > Customize, should limit the home page to just 8 portfolio items:

    #slide-5 #archive-container article:nth-of-type(n+9) {
    	display: none;
    }

    If you give a try, let me us know how it looks!

    staff-loquaciousloon It worked! Now there’s only 8 on the front page! and there’s still 16 in the portfolio. Is there a way I can get only 4 on the front page (now I’m just being picky I know ;) I’m just not great with coding)

    I’m checking the browser status on my home computer now

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’ve updated the browser on my home system and it’s still resulting in the same problem. Not sure what’s wrong.

  • I see it now! I had misunderstood and thought it was happening on the home page where were looking at the number of items displayed. The alignment issue is visible after clicking through to the actual portfolio page!

    It looks like it’s being caused by the items with longer titles – they’re pushing things down when the title extends onto a second line.

    Give this CSS a try:

    .project-info {
    	min-height: 100px;
    }

    That should get them to line up better :)

    In the meantime, I’ll pass this on to the designers to take a look at!

    Ohh that makes sense! Perfect! Thank you so much that worked!
