Harmonic Theme is killing me

  • Unknown's avatar

The Harmonic theme is extremely confusing to me. I love how the demo looks, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to make it look the same, even after scouring through the support page for the theme. For example, how does one set the order of what scrolls on the Front Page? It seems that no matter what I do, the “blog” section comes up second.

Regarding pictures, how do I get it to NOT show up like a blog post? I’ve seen other sites using the theme have their pictures come up as a bunch of tiles and then when you click on the picture, the whole catalog shows up like a gallery. I’m totally confused and would SO appreciate some help other than directing me to the Harmonic demo how to page (which is pretty useless to me by this point).

    Here is my page: http://www.kaityandtheflood.com

It’s a mess because I’m totally confused. Is there someone that can walk me through the different parts? I’ve looked on the WordPress support how to’s and the Harmonic page how to’s and nothing gives me solid, specific directions that I can apply.

Thank you from a frustrated person.

    Hi there,
A good place to start with set up is using the instructions here https://harmonicdemo.wordpress.com/front-page-setup/

Thank you, but I have looked over that entire support page and it does not help me at all. It’s really quite confusing how it’s written.

As you can see on the site, I have it kind of working. What I don’t understand is how to get the portfolio projects to show up differently as blog posts. If you click on the picture at the very bottom of the page, it takes you to another page that looks like a blog post.

Yet on this site using the same template, http://jenniecreates.com, the “photography” section here -> http://jenniecreates.com/portfolio/families/

has the pictures in a random tile formate and when you click on the pictures, it shows up as a gallery style viewer. How does one achieve that?

    Thank you

  • Hi kaityandtheflood,

For example, how does one set the order of what scrolls on the Front Page? It seems that no matter what I do, the “blog” section comes up second.

That’s correct – it’s not possible to change the order of the sections.

Regarding pictures, how do I get it to NOT show up like a blog post? I’ve seen other sites using the theme have their pictures come up as a bunch of tiles and then when you click on the picture, the whole catalog shows up like a gallery.

You can create a gallery in any post or page, with any theme. Here’s how:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/

When you’re creating your gallery, select the “Tiled Mosaic” option from the dropdown menu:

Edit Post kp test site WordPress 1

If you need help with anything else, just let me know.

I’m confused… what’s the difference between creating a page or post and making it a “gallery” than creating a portfolio?

  • what’s the difference between creating a page or post

A post is something you usually add to your blog. Posts are dated, and can have tags and categories associated with them. On your blog, posts are displayed in reverse chronological order, with the most recent one displayed first.

A page usually displays static information, like an About page or a Services page. It’s not dated and has no tags or categories.

You can learn more about the differences between posts and pages here:

    http://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/what-is-the-difference-between-posts-vs-pages-in-wordpress/

    Create a Post

    Create a Page

making it a “gallery” than creating a portfolio?

A gallery is a collection of images that you can look at within one post or page.

Here’s an example of a post with an image gallery in it:

    http://twentyfifteendemo.wordpress.com/2011/07/07/gallery-post-format-example/

A portfolio is something separate from both posts and pages. It’s a different type of information, intended for people like artists who may want to add their paintings or photographs in a separate part of their site, apart from a blog or static pages. Portfolios allows you to also group projects by type, so visitors can view all your watercolour images at once, or all your oil paintings in another section. You can learn more about portfolios here.

You’re awesome and I hope you know how much you are appreciated!

  • Aw, thank you very much!

If you get stuck again, just let me know and I’m glad to help.

I am sure I will get stuck again. Like I said, I love the look and layout of this theme. It’s gorgeous. Would you have any suggestions on another theme with a similar layout that is even more customizable? Doesn’t matter if it’s a free or paid for template.

    Thank you

I do have another question… in the section where I connect with Facebook, how would I make it so that my site connects with a page that I’ve created on Facebook, and NOT my personal page?

    Hi there,
Staff provide a step by step tutorial which is linked to the bottom of your Admin page at http://learn.wordpress.com

The support documentation is all found at the Support link http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also linked to on the bottom of your Admin page.

  • Would you have any suggestions on another theme with a similar layout that is even more customizable? Doesn’t matter if it’s a free or paid for template.

That’s a good question! Harmonic is a pretty unique theme, and I can’t think of one with a similar layout. (I also asked the theme’s designer/developer, and she couldn’t think of one, either!) But you might still want to explore the directory to see if something else strikes your fancy:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/

If you let me know something specific that you’re looking for in a theme it might also help me suggest one.
