Harmonic Theme Site Title
-
Hey, sorry for being away for so long. I had a look at the portfolios, it seems good for placing all my tracks in a “Releases” page.
I can set the featured image of each portfolio to a different small square album art, can I? Will each portfolio be of the same size?
-
Nevermind the last question, I tried it out and it works just as I wanted it too.
I definitely need a decent background for the site. What about the background displayed in the preview of this theme? Is it available anywhere online, can I use it for my site?
-
WordPress wouldn’t have put them there if they didn’t want people to use them.
I take that back. Only one of the images in the demo is the same as the five default backgrounds. I don’t know if you can use images from the demo. I would guess probably not, but you could ask WordPress staff about that.
There are actually five default background images on this theme. All of them are visible in my test site, here: https://harmonick2.wordpress.com/. They will display on your site if you a.) assign one of your pages to the front page template, and
b.) leave the “hide” options unchecked at Customizer > Theme > Visibility. These five are free for you and anyone else to use. -

So, I can’t use this image in my site? https://harmonicdemo.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/tidqblgqw6iut5zhks0f_11891558035_eafdf53bf0_o1.jpg
Maybe if I edit it to suit my site better?

Another thing: How do I make things on a webpage display in different columns? Like text on the keft and an image on the right?

I don’t know. You could ask Staff here by adding a “modlook” tag to the tags in the right sidebar, or contact the creators of the theme directly at http://automattic.com/contact/.
How do I make things on a webpage display in different columns? Like text on the left and an image on the right?
There are themes which do this by default. You might want to look at magazine style themes. I think it would require either CSS customization or a lot of work on each post or page to get that result consistently.
However, on a relatively short post or page it’s a very simple matter to put text on one side and an image on the other. For text and images, I’ve always done this by modifying the alignment of the image (See the Image Alignment support page). If you insert an image above a block of text, then align the image to left or right, the text will go in the opposite direction that you move the image. You may have to decrease the size of the image to get a satisfactory result.

…”a lot of work on each post or page to get that result consistently..” if you try to do it without CSS customization capability or a the right kind of theme, that is.
-
Okay, I’ve got close to what I wanted.
What is the recommended size for a featured image? And is it possible to change the text on the “Read More” button?
And how do the featured images fare on mobile devices?

Maybe if I edit it to suit my site better? You’re more than welcome to use this image! All of the images included with our demo sites have either GPL or Creative Commons licenses, so you’re more than welcome to use them!
Let me know if you have any more questions!

Look, I’m sorry but this whole “what you see isn’t what you get” has been a reoccurring theme (no pun intended) with WordPress themes over the years.
The free (and premium) themes all look very nice and when you install them they look nothing like they do on the live preview.
Did I miss some small text or a disclaimer that said “This is what the site ‘could’ look like. But it won’t. It won’t be even close. Cause you’ll have to jump through a lot of hoops to get there. Have fun!” ?I just find this whole WordPress theme customisation more frustrating than I feel it should be. Mainly because I feel I’m being mislead by promises of pretty looking themes that end up not being as pretty as their live demo sites.
Is it possible to have a live preview for Themes that actually shows a user what the site will look like after the installation?

You can access a live preview of our theme through your wp-admin dashboard at Appearances > Themes. Find the theme you want to preview and click on Preview.
You can also find detailed instructions for the set up of our themes on our theme info pages. You can find these in several ways, but the easiest is usually clicking on the Theme link at the bottom of the My Sites dropdown.
If you have more questions about setting up a theme, please open your own thread. This theme is specifically about the Harmonic theme.
