Hello there, I’m on a free plan and I can still see the option to map my domain with $13 per year.
On my Dashboard, I clicked Domains –> Add Domains –> Use a domain I own, then I see the box at the right showing the Domain Mapping option with $13 per year.

Livechat support is available at WordPress.com if you have a paid plan and also Domain mapping can now only be added to a site as part of a paid plan. If you wanted an additional domain mapped as well as the domain included in your plan then that would be an extra $13, but the first one does need to be part of a plan.

Years ago it used to be available without needing to upgrade to a paid plan and I believe longtime WordPress.com users can continue to renew that option if they don’t let it expire. Everyone else needs an upgraded plan.

I think you were looking at the Premium Plan site in your account at the time. If you select Switch Site and try adding a domain to one of your free sites you’ll find a plan is automatically added if you try to add a new domain mapping.

@kokkieh, I see. I was indeed using the free site and saw the Domain Mapping option with $13 per year when I clicked Use a domain I own. However, I didn’t go further that’s why I don’t see the plan purchase option. I tested again when I’m replying now.
With my experience above, it would be confusing for users as it was shown as $13 per year in the first place for Domain Mapping but when users clicked on it, they’re asked to upgrade to a paid plan. Is it possible to do something to avoid the confusion? Perhaps not to show the Domain Mapping option if the user is on a free plan?

Let’s not take over the OP’s thread with a discussion about this. The current flow was thoroughly tested before it was launched, and was found to the be the least confusing for users. But we’re constantly reviewing and updating these flows, so it might change again in future.
