Has anyone else had lots of spam comments to just one blog post?

  Hi All,

  I’ve been getting lots of spam (mostly about handbags) to just one specific blog post (it’s about a year old – a review of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Getting 2 or 3 a day sometimes. Anyone else receiving this? How do I stop it? Different email address every time, but posting the same jibberish about handbags!

  Spammers like to hit old posts, because they assume no one will be paying attention to delete them. You can shut off comments to that one post for a day or so. Edit the post, scroll way down to the bottom, and un-check the “allow comments” button. That should do the job. You probably won’t be missing any real comments to a post that old, and after a day or two you can restore comments to that post again.

  I reduce spam by using this setting:

  3. Automatically close comments on articles older than __ days – This setting can be used to have comments closed on articles that are X days old. As an example, if you only want articles to accept comments for 30 days you would check the box and type 30 into the text field. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#other-comment-settings
