Has the botnet problem started again?

  The botnet issue does not affect WordPress.com blogs. It only affects WordPress.ORG blogs.

  Nope. They can try, but I’ve only once seen WP.com affected by a DDoS attack (this is NOT one of those) and since then they’ve hugely scaled up their capacity and resistance to attacks like DDos and this brute force one. Assuming your username is not Admin, and you have decent passwords, you’re probably pretty safe. I heard secondhand that the hackers don’t bother with WP.com blogs because they know they will not fall to this kind of attack the way the WP.org ones will. After all, each username can exist only once at WP.com. There are an almost infinite number of WP.org blogs that have “admin” as their username.
